Venue

We have an excellent and immediate opening for a Building Engineer at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This 12,508 seat, multi-purpose arena is the home of the University of Pittsburgh Men’s and Women’s basketball teams and is located in the Oakland neighborhood. The venue also hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year including ceremonies, concerts, exhibitions, camps and conferences.

Job Description

The Building Engineer maintains all facility equipment in good working order including all HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, foodservice, custodial and life safety equipment. In addition, the position requires that both minor and major repairs be performed on said equipment as needed. When necessary, the building engineer escorts and assists various personnel throughout the facility including inspectors, contractors, designers and administrators. Finally, during large events, the engineer provides standby coverage and responds to any immediate needs of the event staff such as regulating temperature, electrical tie-ins, lighting management and taking radio calls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance on all pertinent building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, foodservice and life safety systems. • Troubleshoot and perform any necessary repairs to existing equipment and provide required repair parts information for timely purchases. • As needed, complete the installation of new equipment such as foodservice appliances, motors, lighting fixtures, shelving units and plumbing components. • On event days, provide any necessary preparations for the staff and standby coverage which includes responding to radio calls and monitoring the fire panel. • Provide feedback and recommendations to the Lead Building Engineer with regard to improving outcomes, increased sustainability and long-term success. • Complete work orders as assigned by the Lead Building Engineer. This includes the use of a cloud-based work order system accessible by smart phone or tablet.

Essential Skills and Abilities

• Perform work in a safe manner and maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA and all other applicable laws, regulations, procedures and university guidelines. • Maintain the ability to work independently or as a team while demonstrating good judgement, solid workmanship and effective communication skills. • Must be able to perform strenuous physical duties including lifting, carrying, moving and climbing including the ability to work on your feet 8-10 hours a day. • Sustain an effective, courteous and professional working relationship with clients, students, employees, patrons, staff and fellow building engineers. • Have the flexibility to work extended, irregular or overtime hours including nights, weekends, holidays and emergency recalls as required. • Participate in ongoing instruction and education including the ability to obtain any licenses, certificates or training required by local, state or national authorities.

Qualifications

• Possess a High School Diploma, GED or college degree • Demonstrate comfort in the use of scissor lifts, genie lifts and ladders • Knowledgeable use of hand tools, power tools, machine tools and diagnostic tools • Ability to read and understand drawings, schematics and building blueprints • Experience across multiple disciplines such as HVAC, electrical and carpentry • Proficiency working with electrical gear including panels, breakers and motors • Appropriate combination of training and experience in building operations • Ability or willingness to learn A/V fundamentals in supporting live events • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Windows, Outlook and Word • Possess or acquire a NIULPE license which must be renewed each year

Notes

This is a union position and requires continuous membership in the Local 95 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. This is not a supervisory position.
