Description
Are you interested in being part of a team dedicated to protecting the lives and property of the Commonwealth? The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Building Code Enforcement, is seeking a leader to join our team. The Division is responsible for reviewing plans and inspecting new building construction, as well as additions, alterations, renovations, and buildings involved in a change of occupancy (use) to ensure compliance with adopted codes and referenced standards. This position serves as a key leadership role, providing direction on field operations within the division.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversees all aspects of the branch.
- Ensures all field staff have the necessary equipment and resources to perform their duties.
- Provides technical support to staff as needed.
- Keeps Field Supervisors aware of new techniques, technologies and applications. Monitors implementation and use of new technology for inspections, reports, and timekeeping.
- Monitors existing Expanded Jurisdiction Agreements (EJA's) to ensure agreements are up to date and accurate. Reviews new EJA requests and makes recommendations to the Director and Commissioner's office.
- Investigates complaints filed against local building inspection programs or inspectors.
- Determines inspection and supervisory territory assignments to ensure efficient field operations and balanced workloads.
- Monitors all field staff to ensure consistent application of the Kentucky Building Code (KBC) and adherence to Division policies.
- Collaborates regularly with the Director, Assistant Director, Technical Advisors, and Field Supervisors to develop and refine procedures that ensure code compliance in the field.
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/ Abilities:
- Supervisory experience.
- Extensive knowledge of state building codes, plan logs, and the inspection process.
- Strong multitasking and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication skills.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have a minimum of three years of practical experience as a certified building inspector, level II or III OR three years of experience as a plan reviewer or field inspector employed by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this job classification. Must hold a current certificate for Level III building inspector issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction https://dhbc.ky.gov as defined in KRS 198B.090 https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes/chapter.aspx?id=38087 and 815 KAR 7:070 Title 815 Chapter 7 Regulation 070

- Legislative Research Commission Must complete twelve (12), department approved, Kentucky Inspector Certification Program Continuing Education Unit Credits per year https://www.iccsafe.org/. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Working Conditions
Incumbent will perform work in an office setting and in the field performing inspections. Travel will be required. May be exposed to hazards commonly associated with building construction, which requires compliance with safety procedures.
