Williamsburg James City School District J BLAINE BLAYTON ELEMENTARY - Williamsburg, Virginia is seeking a Building Based Substitute to support instructional staff at J BLAINE BLAYTON Elementary.

The substitute assists with instruction, manages classroom activities, supports lunch and attendance, and helps maintain records and materials under supervision of a teacher. The role is full-time with pay ranging from $18.56 to $29.50 per hour.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required with six months of related experience or training.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and follow written or oral instructions.
  • Basic writing and computing skills.
  • Teacher Assistant II requires 48 college credit hours.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with skills practice and reinforcement activities with students.
  • Use flashcards, games, worksheets and other aids to reinforce learning.
  • Assist with lunch, attendance and classroom operation records.
  • Maintain complete and accurate student records.
  • Supervise and escort students to and from buses, study halls and lunch.
  • Encourage students to complete assignments and reinforce skills.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly learning environment.
  • Prepare materials, bulletin boards and classroom supplies.
  • Perform clerical duties and operate classroom technology.
  • Provide input to the teacher for daily and long-range planning.

Job Summary

Assists teacher with instructor-related work in a cooperative and supportive effort. Provides additional time for direct instruction by the teacher. Responsible for reinforcement of instruction under specific instruction from the teacher.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in skills practice and reinforcement activities, previously introduced by the teacher, either individually or in small groups.
  • Helps students develop skills through use of flashcards, learning games, practice skills, worksheets, and other instructional aides.
  • Assists with lunch, attendance, and other classroom operation records.
  • Assists in maintaining complete and accurate student records.
  • Supervises and escorts students to and from buses, in study halls, lunch, free time, classrooms, and other areas of the school.
  • Encourages and assists students in completing individual or group learning assignments by reinstructing or reinforcing learning skills.
  • Assists in maintaining an attractive, orderly, and safe learning environment.
  • Assists students in finding and correctly using instructional supplies, materials, and equipment. Constructs learning materials and/or games appropriate for specific skills. Distributes and collects material as directed, and assists with the filing and cataloging of materials. Assists in the preparation and maintenance of bulletin boards.
  • Performs clerical duties, including preparing and operating technology, photocopying, laminating, and instructional materials.
  • Provides input to the teacher in planning daily and long-range programs for students.

  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the teacher.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
  • Must possess a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) and six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate through clear and grammatically proper speech, and basic writing and computing skills.
  • Concern for general welfare and education of children; ability to accept and support all children; ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Patience, dependability, interest, punctuality, and ability to follow directions.
  • Teacher Assistant II: completion of a minimum of 48 hours of college credit.
Supervision Exercised

Monitors classroom activities in absence of the teacher.

Supervision Received

Performs duties under the direct supervision of assigned teacher; receives annual performance evaluation from the principal.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Employees are regularly required to stand and reach with hands and arms; walk; sit; stoop or kneel; crouch or crawl. Duties may involve risk resulting from attending to students’ physical or sanitation/hygiene needs. Must be physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
