Position Title: Building Automation Systems Field Technician III

Position Location: Must live in IAD region (Virginia / Washington D.C. area)

JOB SUMMARY

The Building Automation Systems Field Technician III will install building automation systems, work with other installers, support programmers, and take on increased responsibility for assigned field tasks, issue resolution, and project communication. This person will provide technical support to execute project start up, installation and testing, commissioning and closeout of building automation systems software integration projects in industrial, commercial and mission critical / technology sectors.

The Building Automation Systems Field Technician III will work with design engineers, construction contractors, equipment vendors and client staff to support proper operation and acceptance of the automation and software solutions.

The Building Automation Systems Field Technician III will receive general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new projects, tasks or assignments. This person may work independently, consistently exercising discretion and independent judgment on individual work, or may work under immediate supervision. This person may serve as lead on routine projects, tasks or assignments of limited scope.

This person will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Installation and Installation Coordination of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems (35%)

Install and wire BAS controllers and field devicesInstall and terminate low voltage cablesSupport start-up and cutovers of panels and systemsCoordinate assigned activities with subcontractors, vendors and construction trades as needed, under the direction of project leadership. Construction trades generally include various electrical, mechanical and equipment suppliers.Organize assigned job site areas including material logistics / inventory, tools storage and securityProvide technical information and safety guidance for routine activities on siteParticipate in daily and weekly meetings and provide updates on assigned installation activitiesSupport the development and execution of additional services through change ordersDevelop or assist in developing Methods of Procedure (MOPs) for site activitiesProvide input to project team on field conditions, installation progress and potential RFIs

Startup, Commissioning and Closeout of BAS / HVAC Controls Systems (45%)

Support pre-functional and functional testingExecute troubleshooting of BAS systems including corrective actions for routine and moderately complex issuesParticipate in commissioning efforts with external stakeholdersAnalyze system operation, work with project team to demonstrate system operation and verify consistency with the contracted scope of workPerform QA / QC of BAS and integrated systems using BAS software toolsSupport installation inspections and other closeout duties to ensure customer acceptanceProvide markups for shop drawings to document as built conditionsReview basic system trends, alarms and point data to support troubleshooting and closeoutIdentify routine field issues, document corrective actions, and track assigned items through completion

Reporting and Communication (15%)

Support project communication and reporting including daily site updates, daily site safety reporting and progress reportsDocument and track issues and out of scope effortsCommunicate regularly with project managers, field teams, subcontractors and commissioning agents on assigned work, open items and routine project progressEscalate project risks, blockers or technical issues to project leadership when neededMaintain clear documentation of assigned tasks, completed work and open items

Engineering Support and Business Development (5%)

Assist project teams with field information for estimating and takeoffs for proposalsAttend project bid walks as neededAttend engineering surveys for retrofit projects as neededSupport BAS audits and related reports and communication as assigned

Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget

Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING)

TRAVEL / RELOCATION REQUIREMENTS

Primarily supports local and regional project needs, with most travel occurring within the employee’s home market or surrounding area. Must be based within a reasonable commuting distance of the assigned work region and able to travel locally as business needs require. Occasional overnight travel may be required depending on project demands, client needs, or business priorities. Effective May 7, 2025, and in accordance with U.S. federal regulations for domestic air travel, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position. Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on destination and business need. Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities, including but not limited to client sites, meetings with employees, business development meetings, errands on behalf of the business, and industry conferences.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Associates degree or Technical Certificate in Building Automation Systems, Mechanical/Electrical Technology, or a closely related field

OR

Two years of experience with hands-on installation, testing, validation and troubleshooting of controls infrastructure

PLUS

Minimum of two years of additional experience with installation, hands-on testing, validation and troubleshooting of controls infrastructure
