Building Automation Specialist (Technical Engineer)

We're looking for a hands-on Building Automation Specialist to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys figuring out how things work, has computer skills, and is eager to learn about building systems. No formal engineering degree required--we value practical experience and problem-solving ability over credentials.

What You'll Do

  1. Learn to design and implement smart lighting and HVAC control systems
  2. Travel to client sites (10-35%) to set up and troubleshoot systems
  3. Help customers via email, phone, and video calls
  4. Work with our team to create system drawings and documentation
  5. Test new products and features
  6. Lead training sessions for customers

What You Need

  1. Comfort using diagnostic tools to verify lighting and HVAC system operation
  2. Experience tinkering with electronics, home automation, or similar technical projects
  3. Ability to read and understand technical drawings
  4. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  5. Excellent customer service mindset
  6. Ability to work 1 on 1 with customers to troubleshoot issues
  7. Conflict resolution skills and the ability to problem solve to find the optimal resolution to customer issues.
  8. Valid driver's license for domestic travel
  9. Eagerness to learn building automation technology

Bonus items

  1. Certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Project Management Professional (PMP)
  2. Previous experience with wireless lighting commission including home-based products such as Philips Hue
  3. Previous experience reading technical building drawings

Nice to Have (But Not Required)

  1. Experience with commercial building systems
  2. Experience with Linux systems
  3. Knowledge of protocols like BACnet
  4. Background in HVAC or lighting controls
  5. Familiarity with wireless technology
  6. Project management experience

Education and Certifications

  1. Associate or bachelor’s degree, ideally in a technical field but we are flexible based on your experience with technology--or equivalent industry experience.
  2. Certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Project Management Professional (PMP) are a plus.
