The USC department of Facilities Planning & Management (FPM): Energy Services is seeking a Building Automation Controls Technician I to join its team.

The Work You Will Do

The Building Automation Controls Technician I provides user support for automated energy management systems and applications in buildings across the university (e.g., HVAC). The role monitors systems for data security, integrity, quality assurance, and conformance to standard procedures while collaborating with others to coordinate system enhancements and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Maintains equipment (e.g., sensors, thermostats, valves). Commissions, installs, and/or terminates various technical controls (e.g., wiring). Assists engineers, technicians, and others with related work.
  2. Supports building controls/energy management systems. Develops relationships with stakeholders to understand current/future needs. Interacts with customers to resolve problems. Reviews and analyzes system alarms for appropriate actions.
  3. Documents calls and resolutions in databases. Processes work orders and reviews alarms for proper action.
  4. Stays current with industry best practices and emerging technologies. Builds relationships with customers and stakeholders through participation in governance boards and meetings. Ensures reliable service.
  5. Participates in committee meetings as appropriate. Fosters a collaborative environment aligned with USC's Code of Ethics.
  6. Performs other related duties as required.
Job Qualifications

The preferred qualifications include:

  • Associate’s degree or professional certificate in Building Automation Systems (BAS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), or related fields.
  • 2 years of experience in Building Automation and/or Energy Management.
  • Experience with BAS (e.g., Honeywell, Siemens) and energy regulations.
  • Familiarity with BACnet protocols and wiring is a plus.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, BAS software, and applications like Word and Excel.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 year of experience in energy management.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and controls theory.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and independent judgment.
  • Proficiency with OS and software (Windows, Apple, Adobe).
  • Ability to interpret technical documents and drawings.
  • Experience working in collaborative teams.
  • Valid CA driver’s license for the past 2 years.
  • Commitment to USC’s Unifying Values.

The hourly rate is up to $22.57, depending on experience and qualifications. The position may require on-call and weekend work. It offers valuable professional development in building automation technologies with growth potential.
