Job summary

School-District-of-Lancaster seeks a dedicated paraprofessional to assist teachers, support individual and small group instruction, and help manage student needs across the school day.

Responsibilities include monitoring facilities, preparing instructional materials, transporting and supervising students, and assisting with incidents and conflicts under supervision. A strong candidate demonstrates patience, communication and teamwork in a school setting.

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree or HS Diploma/G.E.D. and PDE guidelines compliance.
  • First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  • Experience working with students preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Distribute and collect educational materials.
  • Inventory and organize general supplies and educational materials.
  • Report incidents to principal and assist with support.
  • Supervise students requiring transportation to maintain order on bus/boarding areas.
  • Assist students including ambulatory needs on/off the bus in an orderly fashion.
  • Investigate and mediate student conflicts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

JOB GOAL

To assist in providing a safe, well-organized school environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Provide clerical assistance for teachers as directed by supervisor.
  2. Assist the teacher with individual and small group instruction.
  3. Assist in handling student and parent needs.
  4. Assist in monitoring of lunchroom, lavatories, playgrounds and corridors/stairwells.
  5. Accompany students to and from various locations within the building as assigned.
  6. Assist with monitoring of students entering and leaving building.
  7. Assist with preparation of educational materials, and audio-visual aids and equipment.
  8. Distribute and collect educational materials as required.
  9. Assist in inventorying and organization of general supplies and educational materials.
  10. Report incidents and discipline problems to principal or designee and assist with providing support.
  11. Supervise assigned student(s) who require(s) transportation to maintain appropriate conduct in boarding areas and on the bus.
  12. Assist assigned students including those that require ambulatory support (walker, crutches, wheelchair) in getting on and off the bus in an orderly fashion,
  13. Assist in investigating and mediating student conflicts.
  14. Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Provide support to the main office.
  2. Assist in preparing displays for bulletin boards, cabinets, showcases, etc.
  3. Assist in correction of students' work.
  4. Support the operations of the In-School Suspension (ISS) Center.
  5. Monitor student behavior in the classroom in an emergency situation.
  6. Make and answer phone calls as directed by the teacher or supervisor.
  7. Assist in maintaining child accounting records as needed.
  8. Monitor/supervise activities that may be planned by school personnel.
  9. Must be willing to engage in ongoing professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Associates Degree or High School Diploma/G.E.D. and evidence of education or testing requirements according to PDE guidelines.
  2. First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
  3. Experience working with students preferred.
  4. Ability to exercise a high tolerance for frustration and a high degree of patience.
  5. Ability to de-escalate potentially aggressive situations.
  6. Ability to operate a computer and applicable software and devices.
  7. Ability to work as an individual and as a team member.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  9. Ability to take initiative to creatively solve problems.
  10. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of customer service skills and professionalism.
  11. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  12. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.

  14. Other qualifications to the above that the Board may find acceptable and appropriate.

EVALUATION

For new employees, evaluations will be performed according to the current collective bargaining agreement. For transferring employees, evaluations will be done at 30 days. All regular employees will be evaluated at least yearly.
