Industry runs on hydrogen - 94 million tonnes a year go into fertilizer, fuel, food, pharmaceuticals, and steel, and 99% of it is made from fossil fuels. Tobe Energy is building the machine that changes that: an isothermal electrolyzer driven by a pulsed waveform architecture that hits >92% system efficiency, runs below 30°C with no active cooling, and is built from commodity materials (zero rare earths) with 95% U.S.-sourced manufacturing right here in Oklahoma City.
We're a small team moving fast. Everything we ship, we first design, print, machine, wire, plumb, and break in our own shop.
The Role
This is not a job with a fixed lane. One week you might be assembling and pressure-testing a membrane cell; the next you're wiring a power electronics test stand, tracking down a leak, machining a fixture, or running an experiment overnight and telling us what the data means. As a startup, the role will change day to day, sometimes hour to hour, and we need someone who treats that as the fun part.
We don't care whether you have a degree.
What You'll Do
- Build, assemble, and test prototype electrolyzer cells, stacks, and test stands - mechanical assembly, plumbing/fittings, gaskets and seals, leak and pressure testing
- Wire and troubleshoot electrical systems: DC power distribution, instrumentation, sensors, data acquisition, soldering and harness-building
- Run experiments: set up tests, log data carefully, notice when something looks wrong, and chase down why
- Fabricate parts and fixtures using 3D printers (FDM and resin), hand tools, and shop equipment; help with light machining
- Diagnose failures - electrical, mechanical, chemical - and propose fixes instead of waiting to be told
- Keep the shop safe and organized, and help write down what we learn so we don't learn it twice
- Whatever else the day demands - inventory runs, vendor calls, packing a demo unit, holding the flashlight
Who You Are
- A self-starter. You see a problem and start working it. You'd rather attempt, fail, and adjust than wait for instructions.
- Electrically intelligent. You understand voltage, current, and power at a gut level. You can read a schematic, use a multimeter and oscilloscope, and respect what high current can do. Formal training or hard-won garage knowledge - both count.
- A critical thinker. When something doesn't work, you form a hypothesis, test it, and rule things out methodically. You ask "why" until you hit bedrock.
- Good with your hands. Wrenches, wire strippers, soldering irons, calipers, printers, saws - you're comfortable making physical things and making them well.
- A fast learner. Much of what we do hasn't been done before, so nobody's an expert yet. You pick up new tools, software, and concepts quickly and without ego.
- Flexible. Priorities shift when a prototype fails or a customer calls. You adapt without losing momentum or attention to detail.
- Safety-minded. Hydrogen, oxygen, electrolytes, and serious DC current share our shop. You follow procedures and speak up when something looks sketchy.
Nice to Have (Not Required)
- Experience with electrolyzers, fuel cells, batteries, plating, or other electrochemical systems
- CAD experience (we use Fusion 360) or willingness to learn it
- Power electronics exposure: power supplies, MOSFETs/drivers, PWM, switching circuits
- Basic scripting or data analysis (Python, spreadsheets, anything that turns logged data into answers)
- Welding, machining, or plumbing/pipefitting experience
- Prior startup, farm, military, motorsports, or trade background, anywhere you learned to fix what's in front of you with what's on hand
