Position Overview

The City of San José is seeking a dedicated Budget Analyst to join the City Manager's Budget Office. This role involves analyzing and developing the city's budget, supporting financial planning, and collaborating across departments to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency.

About The Department

The Budget Office, led by the Budget Director, manages the development and monitoring of San José’s budget across over 135 funds, supporting the City Council's goals through comprehensive financial analysis and reporting. The team fosters a dynamic, collaborative environment focused on high-quality contributions.

Position Duties

This is a permanent Analyst I/II position. Responsibilities include:

  1. Operating and capital budget analysis for assigned City Service Areas and departments.
  2. Assisting in the development of budgets, revenue and expenditure projections.
  3. Preparing key budget documents such as the Annual Operating and Capital Budgets, Mid-Year Review, and Fees and Charges Report.
  4. Collaborating with departments to resolve budget issues and reviewing budget requests.
  5. Supporting performance measures tracking and conducting research on budget and policy matters.
  6. Working overtime during peak periods for the preparation and release of budget documents.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Analyst I: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Analyst II: Bachelor's Degree plus two years of professional experience in budget, finance, or related fields, or equivalent experience.

  • Knowledge of municipal budgeting principles, statistical methods, and government finance.
  • Strong communication, analytical thinking, collaboration, computer skills, fiscal management, multitasking, problem-solving, reliability, and communication skills.
Additional Information

This position requires a hybrid work environment, with at least four days onsite. A city-provided laptop and remote access are available, with applicants responsible for their own internet connectivity.

Selection Process
