Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Education in Baton Rouge, LA is seeking a Budget Analyst within the School System Financial Services Fiscal Ops Budget Division to help ensure funds are strategically planned and managed to support student‑focused outcomes.

The role provides exposure to complex funding streams, cross‑functional collaboration, and opportunities to influence statewide educational outcomes through prudent financial management.

Qualifications

  • Three years of budget development or analysis, accounting, auditing, policy planning, procurement, contracts or grants management, project management, statistical analysis, or financial services; OR
  • Six years of full-time work experience in any field; OR
  • A bachelor’s degree.
  • Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of accounts that includes offices/divisions within the agency and any grants and funds owned by those offices/divisions.
  • Monitors and forecasts revenues and expenditures to identify trends and potential funding problems.
  • Prepares required reports and financial statements, including the compilation and analysis of data.
  • Set up and maintain grant budgets for assigned grants in the LaGov system.
  • Provide client services to program staff and managers within assigned portfolios.

Job Focus Area

As a Budget Analyst within the School System Financial Services Fiscal Ops Budget Division, you will play a critical role in advancing this mission by assisting that public funds are strategically planned, accurately managed, and aligned with statewide educational priorities.

The Budget Analyst serves as a key financial partner to assigned offices and programs, providing analysis, guidance, and oversight throughout the budget development and execution process. This position supports the preparation of annual operating budgets, monitors expenditures and revenues, and analyzes data. The role requires collaboration with program leaders, and fiscal staff to ensure resources are allocated efficiently and in support of student-focused outcomes.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:

Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational, or Promotional. The person hired for this position is expected to regularly report to the Baton Rouge office. Current permanent classified state employees may be required to accept a probationary appointment, if selected.

Career Progression: This position participates in a Career Progression Group. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Budget Analyst 1/2/3, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

Work Schedule: Work days are Monday - Friday; work hours will be determined.

Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.

**Note regarding the advertised pay range: The maximum amounts listed are the maximum salary amounts a person can make over their career and not the maximum amount we are allowed to pay a new hire**

Budget Analyst 2 (AS 614)

Hourly: $21.61 - $37.88

Monthly: $3,745.73 – $6,566

Annually: $44,948.80 – $78,790

Budget Analyst 3 (AS 616)

Hourly: $24.31 – $43.37

Monthly: $4,213.73 – $7,518

Annually: $50,564.80– $90,210
