Responsibilities

  • Cut and handle limbs and debris, feeding material into a wood chipper when needed.
  • Assist ground crew with site prep, traffic control, and debris removal.
  • Communicate effectively with crew, supervisors, clients, and the public.
  • Perform basic maintenance on tools and report issues.
  • Follow instructions and work orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Adhere to environmental regulations regarding debris disposal.
  • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions.
  • Perform bucket rescue procedures when necessary (training provided).

Job Summary:

The Bucket Trimmer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a bucket truck to perform tree trimming, pruning, and removal tasks. This position requires expertise in operating aerial lifts, knowledge of tree care practices, and a strong commitment to safety, especially when working near electrical hazards. The Bucket Trimmer works as part of a team to ensure projects are completed effectively and to the satisfaction of clients or utility standards.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain bucket trucks (aerial lifts) safely and efficiently. This includes daily inspections, pre-trip checks, and ensuring the equipment is in proper working order.
  • Perform tree trimming, pruning, and removal according to industry best practices and client/utility specifications. This involves using hand tools, chainsaws, and other necessary equipment while working at height.
  • Maintain a safe working environment for themselves and their crew, adhering to all safety regulations and company policies. This is especially critical when working near power lines, requiring knowledge of electrical hazards and safety procedures.
  • Clear and trim trees and brush away from utility lines, roads, buildings, or other specified areas.
  • Properly cut and handle tree limbs and debris, ensuring efficient cleanup and disposal, often involving feeding material into a wood chipper.
  • Assist ground crew members with tasks such as site preparation, traffic control, and debris removal.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members, supervisors, clients, and the public.
  • Perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment, reporting any issues or necessary repairs.
  • Follow instructions and work orders accurately and efficiently.
  • Adhere to all applicable environmental regulations regarding tree care and debris disposal.
  • Participate in safety briefings and training sessions.
  • Perform emergency procedures such as bucket rescue when necessary (training provided).
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Experience: Previous experience in tree trimming and bucket truck operation is often required (specific years may vary).
    • Experience operating heavy machinery
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid driver's license is required; a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, especially for larger trucks.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Proficiency in operating and maneuvering bucket trucks safely and effectively.
    • Knowledge of tree species, growth habits, and proper pruning techniques.
    • Ability to identify and mitigate hazards, especially electrical hazards.
    • Skill in using various tree trimming tools and equipment, including chainsaws, hand saws, and ropes.
    • Strong understanding of safety regulations and procedures related to tree care and aerial lift operation.
    • Ability to work at heights and in various weather conditions.
    • Good physical condition with the ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and climb.
    • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
    • Ability to follow instructions and work independently when needed.
    • Good hand-eye coordination and depth perception.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in utility vegetation management.
  • Familiarity with specific utility standards and regulations.
  • Knowledge of knots and rigging techniques.
  • Experience with different types of aerial lift equipment.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds or more.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing.
  • Ability to work at significant heights.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
