Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The mission of the Office of Student Affairs is to create a supportive environment in which medical students may develop personally and professionally, and to maintain records of students' accomplishments toward their medical school requirements.

Primary Purpose of Position

This is an "Internal Posting" open only to applicants who are currently permanent BSOM faculty of East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine or ECU Health-employed Physicians who are currently involved in clinical teaching of Brody School of Medicine medical students. These positions will be part-time (.10 FTE/10%) reassignments of time for Brody School of Medicine faculty members or ECU Health-employed Physicians.

Brody School of Medicine Clinical Faculty Advisors play a vital role in fostering belonging, professionalism, wellness, and service aligned with BSOM's commitment to improving the health of eastern North Carolina. Clinical Faculty Advisors partner with student leaders and collaborate with House Deans to cultivate supportive learning environments across all four years.

Clinical Faculty Advisors will report directly to the Brody School of Medicine House Deans.

Job Duties:

Student Support Responsibilities - 80%:

• Mentor students in professional identity formation and career exploration.


• Support Learning Community student leaders and community-building efforts.


• Promote wellbeing and professionalism.


• Participate in Learning Community programming and reflection activities.


• Participate in clinical simulation and/or clinical skills sessions to provide direct and formative feedback to assigned students (approximately 4 half-day sessions per academic year)


• Serve as a primary advisor and mentor for an assigned cohort of medical students, providing guidance on academic concerns, professional, and personal development throughout their medical school journey.


• Offer career advising and support for residency applications as needed in collaboration with House Deans, including reviewing components of subspecialty specific application system for students in the individual House Dean's assigned cohort.


• Serve as a bridge between students and university resources, including BSOM Office of Student Success and Wellness, Student Health, Counseling Services.


• Other duties as assigned.

Learning Community Administrative Responsibilities - 20%:

• Biannual required meetings with assigned students.


• Monitoring assigned students' academic performance.


• Quarterly meetings with House Deans to share community trends and concerns.


• Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment - Approximately .10 FTE, 16 hours per month

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Minimum Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

• MD, DO, or MBBS from an appropriately accredited institution or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.


• Current Brody School of Medicine faculty member at a rank of Clinical Assistant Professor/Assistant Professor or higher or ECU Health-employed Physician who is currently involved in clinical teaching of Brody School of Medicine medical students.


• Minimum of 1-year post-residency/fellowship training experience as a clinician in a medical educational environment.


• Demonstrated commitment to student development, mentoring, and support.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

• Full, unencumbered license to practice medicine in North Carolina.


• Full schedule DEA Registration Certificate.


• Credentialing with ECU Physicians and/or privileges with ECU Health.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Prior experience with the education of medical students.


• Prior leadership experience in pre-clerkship or clerkship medical education, student affairs, or a related area.


• Commitment to student mentorship and development.


• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
