Job summary

Grace Place for Children and Families in Naples, FL is seeking a part-time Haitian Creole Translator to support the Bright Beginnings literacy program by providing classroom translation for Haitian Creole speakers, Monday–Thursday mornings.

Under supervision, you will prepare materials, liaise with teachers and staff, assist with events, and help maintain program records. Fluency in English and Haitian Creole and basic computer skills are required.

Qualifications

• Bilingual in English and Haitian Creole required.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
• Willingness to obtain required certifications within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide translation in Parent Education classes (Mon–Thu, 9:00 AM–12:30 PM).

• Assist in translating written materials as requested.
• Prepare classroom translations by reviewing curriculum in advance.
• Assist in coordinating translations for events and orientations.
• Edit and proofread translated text for accuracy.

Job Title: Bright Beginnings Haitian Creole Translator
Reports To: Bright Beginnings Program Manager
Classification: Non-exempt
Part-Time: 14 hours/week (Monday – Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM)
Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Summary/Objective:

Under the leadership and guidance of the Bright Beginnings Program Assistant Manager, the Bright Beginnings Haitian Creole Translator is responsible for supporting the facilitation of the Grace Place Family Literacy Model® curriculum by providing translation in parent education classrooms for our students speaking Haitian Creole.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide seamless translation of ideas and concepts in Parent Education classes (Monday – Thursday, 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM)
• Communicate students’ needs to the Parent Time Teacher to ensure that the Parent Time Teacher remains knowledgeable of students’ needs
• Connect students to Program Administration for further support or referrals as needed
• Prepare for classroom translation daily by reviewing the week’s Parent Time curriculum prior to the beginning of class
• Assist as the liaison between students and teachers, and classmates
• Establish a rapport between the students, between the students and the translator, and between the students and the teacher
• Translate for Parent Time guest presenters as requested
• Assist the Parent Time teacher with classroom preparation as requestedAssist program administration in the distribution of program announcements
• Assist in the translation of written materials from one language into another as requested
• Edit and proofread translated text for accuracy as requested
• Assist in translation for Bright Beginnings Special Events (i.e. graduations) and Parent Meetings (i.e. Bright Beginnings Orientations, Rising PreK Talk, etcientation) as requested

Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED

Experience

• Proven experience in providing translation support in an educational context, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Bi-lingual, English and Haitian Creole required
• Willingness to acquire additional certifications deemed to be requirements for the position
• Demonstrated experience working with diverse cultures and populations and ability to communicate effectively, required
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, use of internet, and basic computer skills to maintain program records and communication with parents, volunteers, partners, and community
• Strong interpersonal verbal and communication skills
• Commitment to the mission and core values of Grace Place
• Current first aid and CPR certificates – can obtain within 90 days of employment
• Willingness to submit to Fingerprinting and Background Checks
• Compliance with Good Moral Character as described by the Department of Children and Families (DCF)
