Editor – The Daily Record (Maryland)
Hybrid role that requires reporting to the Baltimore office Tuesdays and Thursdays. Lead the editorial vision across the brand(s), manage staff, and act as a community leader in the local business environment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with leaders to develop editorial vision, key beats, special products calendar, story quantity expectations, and more.
- Work with the Managing Director and Content Lead to grow revenue opportunities by creating new products, collaborating on niche products, and expanding content.
- Partner with editors, reporters and digital operations to apply best practices to increase online readership and engagement.
- Manage all editorial employees for the brand(s) – directly or indirectly – ensuring deadlines, quality and quantity meet or exceed expectations.
- Hire, train and mentor editorial staff.
- Manage freelance expenses within budget while meeting the brand’s content needs across print, digital, niche and event publications.
- Select honorees for all Power Lists based on discussions with editorial staff and community input, and follow best practices for the Power List process.
- Ensure all special products meet BTM standards by leading their production or collaborating with the special products team.
- Support the events process by helping develop summit themes, brainstorming speakers, selecting honorees, writing/editing scripts, reviewing videos, etc., up to the event.
- Serve as emcee and network with attendees during events.
- Moderate and help select panelists for webinars and panel discussions.
- Attend key business events to build connections and demonstrate the brand’s local community focus.
- Meet with key business leaders virtually or in person to develop mutually beneficial relationships and expand the network.
- Provide support to sales staff when pitching to potential advertisers without compromising editorial integrity.
- Oversee publication of community-submitted content such as columns, op‑eds and letters to the editor.
- Respond promptly to feedback, criticism and suggestions from the community.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or relevant work experience; law degree desired but not required.
- 4+ years of experience in the news industry with editing, writing, and reporting.
- Knowledge of legal news coverage and local legal community.
- AP Stylebook knowledge.
- Strong computer skills and digital news management: Word, Excel, WordPress, Photoshop, Reader/Acrobat and internet research.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
- Reliable transportation and ability to commute to the Baltimore office Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- Reliable home internet connection (minimum 50 mbps upload / 10 mbps download).
