Job summary

Primera Engineers is seeking a civil engineering intern in Chicago, IL. You will assist experienced engineers in preparing studies and design plans for transportation projects, including structural elements and inspections.

As a student, you will gain hands‑on experience, work closely with our team of experts, and contribute to real‑world solutions while polishing CAD skills and engineering fundamentals.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree program in civil engineering with GPA 3.0+.
• Junior or higher in curriculum and dedicated to learning.
• Enrolled in civil engineering program and eager for hands‑on design experience in a real project environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist with projects studies/reports and design plans for projects including structural elements.
• Support data collection and prepare technical calculations under supervision.
• Draft plans using CAD and organize project documentation and filing.

Our Transportation division is a talented team of experts working together to deliver engineering solutions that move people in a smarter way. We provide full-service planning, design and construction management services on everything from roadways and bridges to airports, stormwater infrastructure, and parks/recreation projects primarily for state and local agencies and municipalities.

Who You Are

• You’re studying civil engineering with a focus on structural. You're enrolled in an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree program. You're at least a Junior or more advanced in your curriculum, you’re passionate about what you’re learning and boast a GPA of 3.0 or above.
• You’re an eager student looking to gain hands‑on experience working in an office environment. You’re highly‑motivated and looking to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom toward delivering unique solutions for real‑world clients. Prior internship experience is a plus, but definitely not required.
• You’re a people person. You’re friendly and have a sense of humor. Connecting with people is important. You’ll work side‑by‑side Primera’s team of transportation engineering experts.
• You are proficient with business and engineering applications. Microsoft Office proficiency is a must, AutoCAD and/or MicroStation proficiency is preferred.

What You’ll Do

• You’ll apply what you’re learning. You’ll support engineers in the preparation of projects studies/reports and design plans for projects that can include structural studies and design, and structure inspections. You’ll assist with data collection and prepare technical calculations.
• You’ll gain well‑rounded experience. Working on all types of projects, you’ll be mentored by experts in your field to enhance your current classroom curriculum. We learn by doing, so you’ll be given a good deal of responsibility. You’ll be in charge of project documentation and project filing, as well as plan drafting using CAD. You’ll also learn a thing or two about state and local standards and regulations.
• You’ll enjoy what you do. You’ll work with great people, learn, grow and have a good time doing it.
