The Opportunity

WSDOTis currently seeking a journey-level specialist to fill a Regionwide Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 vacancy in Vancouver, WA. Assigned to the Southwest Region (SWR), under the direction of a Maintenance Specialist 5, this position will be responsible for operating a wide variety of bridge maintenance equipment and tools, performing routine maintenance and structural repairs on floating, moving, and fixed structures on in emergencies when damage is caused by the motoring public or acts of nature. In this position, you will also be responsible for safely and effectively performing journey-level work in the maintenance, repair, operation, and reconstruction of over 650 bridges in WSDOT’s Southwest Region to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. Working on the Bridge Crew requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to perform skilled trades work and operate highway equipment and tools.Our top candidate will be a skilled specialist in one or more trades who enjoys working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.

What to Expect

This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. BMS2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Bridge Maintenance Specialist will:

  • Diagnose deficiencies and repair/replace bridge components.
  • Perform Preventative Maintenance (PM) such as drain cleaning, bridge deck sealing, painting, expansion joint cleaning and bridge cleaning.
  • Maintain, modify, and repair components of bridge structures.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches and follow specific permit agreements related to bridge work
  • Operate specialized equipment such as small boats,personnel lifts and Under Bridge Inspection Trucks.
  • Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures and detours; conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
  • Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
  • Respond to emergency bridge hits from third parties. Assist area maintenance crews in storm events to include performing snow and ice control

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, at least one (1) of the following are required:

  • Two (2) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 with experience in heavy construction, carpentry, concrete, steel fabrication, electrical or millwright. OR
  • Journey level standing experience in a construction trade as attested by:
    • Completion of recognized apprenticeship
    • Full journey status in a trade union
    • Four (4) years of experience as a full-time helper to a journey worker in the specified trade OR
  • Equivalent education/experience.

In addition to one of the above, the following arealso required:

  • A valid driver’s license.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with endorsement N and without air brakes restriction, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging,or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
  • Skilled in theuse of radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
  • Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
  • Experience reading and understanding bridge construction plans for trouble shooting.
  • Strong Knowledge and understanding of structural systemsmade from concrete, steel, and wood.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by.
  • Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds from one location to another safely.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights exceeding100 feet, over land or water.
  • Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an after-hours callout.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • A high school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience operating and performing preventative maintenance with vehicles 15,000 GVW or greater.
  • Skilled in the use of computers for communicating and sendingemails and attachments, using Microsoft Office.
