Job Location: Central Office, 105 West Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, MO

Two positions are available.

The bridge location and layout designer is responsible for all aspects of preliminary design and final layouts for highway structures, including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and the widening and rehabilitation of existing structures. Responsibilities include preparing bridge memorandums, hydraulic analysis, cost estimating, and ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines. Tasks are performed under general supervision.

  • Conduct independent hydraulic and hydrologic analysis for stream crossing structures and geometric designs for grade separation structures to determine appropriate types, span lengths, widths, grades, and substructure types.
  • Evaluate multiple design alternatives and prepare comparative cost estimates to select the most structurally and fiscally practical option.
  • Prepare bridge memorandums for new and rehabilitated structures, detailing all necessary aspects and specific requirements for internal contractual agreements.
  • Collaborate with department personnel, agencies, consultants, contractors, fabricators, suppliers, railroads, utilities, and other stakeholders to gather or provide information, obtain permits, or agree on structural layouts for final design; serve on core teams.
  • Coordinate and review work with division and district personnel to obtain valley section data, surveys, and soundings.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training exam.
  • At least five years of civil engineering experience with proficiency in structural, hydraulic, or highway design. An advanced degree in civil engineering with emphasis on these areas may substitute for up to two years of experience.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Remote work from any MoDOT facility may be considered.
  • Occasional statewide travel is required.
