Job description

Job Title: Civil Engineer - 20215

Serves as a Senior Bridge Inspector under the supervision of a Team Leader in the Bridge Inspection & Management unit of the Bureau of Maintenance, Inspection, and Operations. Under supervision, performs in-depth, routine, special, and emergency inspections using various equipment and tools. The job involves inspecting elevated structures over roadways, railroads, water, and tunnels in confined spaces, utilizing equipment such as bucket trucks, man-lifts, ladders, and snoopers in all weather conditions. Prepares detailed bridge condition sketches, produces inspection reports according to accepted standards, and identifies potential hazards. Also responsible for preparing structural and safety flags with all necessary plans, drawings, and technical specifications. May assist the Director of Bridge Inspection with office work related to bridge inspections and may be required to work evenings, nights, and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
  2. A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License, which must be maintained throughout employment.

A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution may substitute for one year of the required civil engineering experience. To qualify for higher assignment levels, candidates must have at least one year of recent experience as a major contributor or project leader on complex projects requiring specific expertise.

Preferred Skills

One year of experience in bridge/structure design, construction, inspection, or maintenance is required. Ability to perform inspections in all weather, including nights and weekends. A valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License in New York State may be required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.
