Qualifications

• EIT certification and 5 years of bridge inspection experience.
• MA PE license (preferred) and NHI courses completed.
• Experience with AutoCAD; MicroStation desirable; structural analysis software exposure.
• Able to read plans, manage field work, and travel within continental US.
• Valid driver's license and ability to lift gear in field conditions.

Overview

GFT is seeking a Bridge Inspection Team Leader to join the Transportation group in Boston, MA. This role follows a hybrid work model and is based in Boston. The position focuses on leading field inspections and preparing inspection reports for complex and non-complex bridges and tunnels for clients throughout Massachusetts and the greater New England area, with opportunities for national exposure and training.

What you will do

• Lead field inspection activities and complete inspection reports for bridges and tunnels.
• Manage entry-level project responsibilities and pursue further training where desired.
• Perform structural design/analysis, prepare load rating reports, construction documents, project specifications, and quantity/cost estimates as needed.
• Provide construction inspection services as part of day-to-day duties.
• Coordinate field operations with subcontractors and subconsultants; plan inspections; and support preparation of business proposals and safety plans.
• Develop and document clear inspection findings using tablets and associated software; prepare concise structure inspection evaluation reports.
• Perform load rating analyses and participate in bridge design assignments involving plans, specifications, calculations, quantities, and cost estimates.
• Ensure accuracy of engineering design, reports, load ratings, and plans while adhering to budgets and project schedules.

Education | Experience

• Bachelor's degree in civil and/or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited university or college.
• Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification.
• Experience in complex bridge safety inspections (5 years; MA Team Leader qualification typical).
• Completion of NHI courses: Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (FHWA-NHI-130055) and Bridge Inspection Techniques for NSTMs (FHWA-NHI-130078).
• Experience operating aerial lift equipment (bucket trucks, manlifts, under-bridge inspection vehicles).
• Working knowledge of MS Office; proficiency with engineering design packages (AutoCAD required; MicroStation desirable); familiarity with structural analysis software (e.g., Staad.Pro, MathCAD, LUSAS).
• Ability to read design plans and shop drawings and assess contractor compliance.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and professional networks; willingness to travel within the continental United States.
• Physical ability to perform field work, work at heights, lift gear, and work in adverse weather.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Collaborative problem-solving and encouragement of peer learning within a team.

What we prefer you bring

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in MA.
• Completion of NHI Tunnel Safety Inspection (FHWA-NHI-130110).
• Structural engineering background; knowledge of MicroStation, AutoCAD; experience with structural drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and basic programming; willingness to learn.
• Ability to commute to the Boston Office as required.
• Rope access experience or interest in learning rope access techniques (SPRAT, IRATA).
