Job summary

GFT in Pittsburgh is seeking a Bridge Designer to join our Transportation Practice. This hybrid role focuses on designing highway and railway bridges, performing evaluations, inspections, and load calculations under supervision.

You will contribute to drafting plans with CADD, prepare basic specs, review shop drawings, and support cost estimating while collaborating with the bridge team to meet quality and budget targets.

Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering pursued or completed (preferred).
  • 0–4 years of experience.
  • Experience with CADD is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare details and plans for highway/railway bridges and related structures.
  • Assist with bridge inspections for routine structures under supervision.
  • Assist with structural design activities for routine structures.
  • Gather data for cost estimating.
  • Prepare basic specifications.
  • Review shop drawings for contract compliance.
  • Draft sections of technical reports.
  • Develop construction plans with CADD, including 3D models.
  • Collaborate with project team within the bridge discipline.
  • Follow QA/QC procedures and client guidelines on time and budget.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through workshops and societies.

GFT is seeking a Bridge Designer to join our Transportation Practice in Pittsburgh! This role follows a hybrid work model.

What you’ll be challenged to do:

Under close supervision, performs technical evaluations, inspections, and designs for a wide variety of assignments including structural design and analysis for highway/railway bridges and related structures, bridge inspection, load ratings, and quantities. Performs assignments of limited scope which require the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related design engineering tasks. Assignments may involve some interpretation of Design Manuals and Guidelines that will be evaluated by a senior level staff member.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
  • Prepares details and plans in support of broader engineering activities involving the design of highway/railway bridges and related structures.
  • Assists with bridge inspection activities for routine structures under direction of Inspection Team Leader.
  • Assists with structural design activities for routine structures under direction of Design Team Leader.
  • Gathers, calculates and records information to be used for cost estimating.
  • Prepares basic specifications
  • Reviews shop drawings to evaluate compliance with contract documents.
  • Prepares first draft of technical reports or sections of larger reports.
  • Utilizes CADD to develop construction plans which may include 3D models.
  • Works as part of a project team within the bridge discipline.
  • Follows project delivery and quality control procedures and standards in compliance with client and company specific guidelines on time and within budget.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through attendance at educational workshops and participation in professional societies.
What you will bring to our firm:
  • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • Fundamentals of Engineering has been taken and passed, preferred
  • 0 to 4 years of experience
  • Experience with CADD required
What we prefer you bring:
  • Working knowledge of Design Software
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Possesses strong oral and written communications skills
Compensation:

The salary range for this role is $70,000 - $80,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
