Job summary

Bowman is seeking a Bridge Design Engineer III to join our team in PA locations including Exton, Camp Hill, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or Fort Washington. You will lead bridge/structural design efforts, perform NBIS inspections, and coordinate with clients and internal teams to deliver transportation infrastructure projects.

The role requires a civil engineering degree, 5+ years of transportation experience, and professional licensing or progress toward PE.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Five or more (5+) years of professional engineering experience with an emphasis on transportation engineering or related field.
  • EIT Registration required, or alternatively, six or more (6) years of successful structural engineering experience required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Registration or ability to receive within six (6) months preferred.
  • C.B.S.I. certification preferred.
  • Experience with the preparation of bridge/structural plans required.
  • Experience directing tasks and performing QA/QC required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Valid state driver's license and ability to successfully pass a motor vehicle check or reliable form of transportation to/from the office and/or project site strongly preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, or other engineering design software.
  • Proficient knowledge of PennDOT computer aided bridge design software such as PSLRFD, ABLRFD, BXLRFD, BPLRFD, etc.
  • Ability to analyze and design structural elements related to non-bridge structures.
  • Knowledge of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), permitting agency and industry design, permitting and construction standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of construction practices.
  • The ability to work with minimum supervision and efficiently on technical design elements including engineering plans, calculations, reports, permit applications, specifications and engineering estimates.

Purpose

The Bridge Engineer III will perform bridge design and bridge inspection activities for both public and private clients throughout Pennsylvania. The candidate will utilize complex structural engineering techniques, procedures and criteria for transportation and infrastructure projects. The goal is to expand our bridge group, and this role is critical is helping us to achieve this objective.

Responsibilities
Leadership and Direction
  • Receive broad guidance relating to overall key objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters and broad parameters for execution. Receive direction as needed, and especially on highly complex assignments. Independently apply extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields. Review work produced by staff for quality assurance.

  • May serve as a lead/resource among team of colleagues in equivalent roles to share technical proficiency, guidance, mentorship and delegation of assignments. May occasionally provide feedback to managers.

At the Operational and Company Level
  • Work closely with more senior members to learn about and assist with transportation engineering and planning work. Assist with the marketing of the firm's capabilities to establish new clients and enhance relationships.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines and internal services/groups/offices as necessary.

Do the Work
  • Work side by side with the project team on bridge/structures projects.

  • Execute technical assignments and lead the efforts on all phases of a variety of bridge/structures projects under direct supervision of a Project Manager or Senior Project Manager.

  • Preparation of preliminary structure plans (TS&L) as well as final plan preparation, including development of special provisions and cost estimates.

  • Perform NBIS Inspections on various structure types throughout Pennsylvania.

  • Coordinate and conduct field visits and ensure appropriate data collection and field observations occur.

  • Provide internal and external technical presentations.
