Job summary

Bell & Evans in the United States is seeking a Flock Supervisor to assist the Breeder Manager in maintaining a high-quality hatching egg supply. The role covers rearing pullets and cockerels from day of age to 65 weeks, ensuring adherence to production standards.

You will manage daily duties on farm, coordinate paperwork, vaccinate flocks, monitor weights, and supervise flock housing and movement, communicating with the Breeder Manager and contracted growers to uphold safety and quality.

Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY:

Flock Supervisor assists Breeder Manager in maintaining a high-quality hatching egg supply for the company. More specifically, the Flock Supervisor is responsible for all aspects of rearing and growing of pullets and cockerels from day of age to 65 weeks.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain good communication with Breeder Manager on what is going on in the field.
  • Complete and turn in all paperwork in a timely manner, including service reports, supply billing, vaccine billing and MTech data.
  • Perform NPIP and movement blood tests.
  • Obtain samples for testing according to schedule set forth by the Breeder Manager (i.e.: feed, litter, swabs, etc.).
  • Perform on farm necropsies as necessary and prescribe remedies in accordance with set policies and manufacturers’ guidelines.
  • Submit birds to diagnostic lab for necropsy as necessary, while working with Breeder Manager on diagnosis and treatment and/or preventative measures.
  • Administer all water and spray vaccinations to flocks. Observe outside vaccination crews to ensure quality of service.
  • Be present at all flock placements. Assist in placing pullets and cockerels in pullet house. Perform day of delivery spray vaccination at placement.
  • Weigh pullets and cockerels weekly. Supervise and determine weekly feed amounts. Work to maintain adherence to feeding and body weight goals.
  • Be present and assist in all flock housings. Insure correct house setup and proper movement from pullet to breeder house.
  • Ensure effectiveness of cleaning and disinfecting of contracted premises.
  • Observe pullet and hen house feedings on a routine basis.
  • Schedule feed delivery for all pullets and breeders under supervision.
  • Take a proactive role in assuring a safe, quality product for the hatchery.
  • Attend industry meetings as directed by Breeder Manager.
  • Practice habits of good personal grooming and hygiene.
  • Wear clothing appropriate for position and that promotes a positive company image.
  • Promote good company/employee and grower relations by using good human relation techniques.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise and train your people so that they’re fully capable of implementing the Company’s policies and procedures. Regularly meet with them to evaluate their performance. Establish yearly educational plan for each employee based on their needs. Perform annual personnel evaluation and recommend goals.

Maintain good communication with contracted growers, providing feedback on performance, house and bird conditions and adherence to all production requirements.

Visit growers weekly, at a minimum, supervising development of flocks and management of conditions.

Manage all breeder house activities. This includes feed and weight management of males and females, egg pack, hatching egg quality assurance, and spiking movement.

Must be able to evaluate situations independently and make sound decisions regarding contracted growers while keeping Breeder Manager informed in matters of relevance.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to speak English, read and interpret documents such as safety rules, instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Ability to write correspondence.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to department staff.
