Job description

The Commercial Grounds Branch Manager holds full operational, financial, and strategic accountability for the overall planning, performance, and profitability of a designated Commercial Grounds Management Branch. Serving as a key leadership role, the Branch Manager oversees and mentors a professional staffing including Account Managers, Production Managers, the Enhancement Manager, and the Enhancement Designer/Estimator.

The ideal candidate is an inspiring, high-integrity leader with deep expertise in commercial landscape management. Acting as a critical strategic partner to the General Manager and Vice President, the Branch Manager drives operational excellence, fosters a culture of safety and professional development, and ensures the branch consistently achieves its safety, quality, and financial milestones.

II. Key Responsibilities
  • Policy & Procedure Implementation: Champion and enforce all Bland Landscaping Company (BLC) policies, operational standards, and administrative procedures across CRM, enhancement design, installation, and maintenance divisions.
  • Performance Optimization: Balance high-quality horticultural standards with branch profitability by utilizing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics.
  • Talent Development: Drive the professional growth and career progression of branch personnel (Levels II through VI) through structured training, coaching, and performance management, partnering closely with the corporate Recruiter and the Vice President of Operations.
  • Culture & Cohesion: Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment. Lead bi-weekly branch meetings with structured, executive-approved agendas.
2. Operations & Horticultural Excellence
  • Quality Assurance: Supervise and audit all field operations and horticultural practices through the Account Manager and Production Manager teams to guarantee premium service delivery.
  • Industry Innovation: Stay at the forefront of the green industry by pursuing continuing education, participating in seminars, and leveraging relationships with universities and industry leaders to continuously elevate branch expertise.
  • Subcontractor Management: Provide direct and indirect oversight of subcontractors to ensure their compliance with BLC quality, safety, and timeline standards.
  • Fiscal Accountability: Manage the branch budget, enforce cost-control measures, and oversee all purchasing, invoicing, inventory control, billing, and accounts receivable collections.
  • Inventory Control: Conduct, record, and submit accurate monthly branch inventory reports to the Controller.
  • Data Integrity & Systems Utilization: Proactively ensure data accuracy within company systems (such as BOSSLM mobile timesheets, work orders, and inventory) to support reliable accounting and scheduling.
  • Resource Forecasting: Utilize BOSSLM software (including Gantt and OLAP reporting tools) to project labor, equipment, and material requirements on a seasonally adjusted basis. Partner with Production Managers to actively adjust crew schedules to align with budgeted hours.
  • Asset & Fleet Management: Collaborate with the Fleet Manager and Production Managers to maintain accurate equipment records, oversee timely repairs using approved vendors, and ensure the safe operation of all physical assets.
4. Client Relations & Business Development
  • Contract Retention: Cultivate strong, direct and indirect client relationships to maintain a minimum 95% contract retention rate across commercial accounts.
  • Customer-Centric Communication: Ensure prompt resolution of client concerns and position the branch as a highly responsive, trusted partner.
  • Contract Lifecycle Management: Review and approve all contract renewals and proposed price adjustments, presenting finalized agreements to the General Manager and Vice President for executive signature.
  • Sales Pipeline Execution: Drive the branch commercial maintenance and enhancement sales pipelines to meet or exceed annual growth targets established by executive leadership. Monitor pipeline progress and contract health using BOSS reporting tools.
  • Safety Program Leadership: Implement and champion BLC's comprehensive safety program in coordination with the Vice President of Operations and HR/Recruiter.
  • Risk Management: Oversee fleet safety by ensuring all drivers maintain a safe driving record, periodically auditing Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) in coordination with HR.
  • Physical Resilience: Maintain the ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and navigate environmental risks typical of the North Carolina landscape (e.g., uneven terrain, heat, cold, pollen, thorns, stinging insects, and poison ivy).
III. Position Requirements & Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Degree: A 2-year or 4-year degree in Horticulture, Agricultural Sciences, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
  • Experience: 2 to 5+ years of progressive supervisory and leadership experience, preferably within commercial grounds management (prior experience within BLC is highly valued).
Licenses & Certifications
  • Pesticide License: Active North Carolina Department of Agriculture (NCDA) Pesticide Applicators License (or the ability to obtain/transfer it within a specified timeframe).
  • Driver's License: Valid North Carolina Driver's License with a consistently clean, safe driving history.

  • Technical Expertise: Comprehensive, hands-on knowledge of commercial turf care, ornamental horticulture, chemical application, and landscape construction procedures.
