QUALIFICATIONS: Proficiency with the Braille Codes utilized by students in the vision program, including UEB/EBAE (Literary), Nemeth (Math and Science), and Music Codes as well as Foreign Language and BANA rules of Textbook Formatting; Knowledge Of Tactile Graphics production; Ability to operate and troubleshoot Braille/Tactile software and embossers; Ability to directly enter braille (6-key entry) via computer, the Perkins, and (for tactiles and corrections) slate and stylus.
Must have basic computer skills to utilize both CIU-20 computer-based and web-based programs .
Braille Specialist neededfor theSensory Impaired Support program. JOB GOAL: Enhance learning by providing all required instructional materials in quality braille to visually impaired students in a manner which conveys the print as clearly as possible. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. In coordination with the vision teacher, procure needed materials to be brailled. This can include tests, quizzes, worksheets, handout packets, board/overhead notes, magazine/newspaper articles, comments/corrections on papers or tests, mid-terms, finals, school and community maps, etc. 2. Braille the materials requested in strict accordance with the rules of the Code required, using contractions and formatting appropriate to the skill level of the student. Include Transcriber's Notes to explain any new/unfamiliar symbols, variations from print form, and overviews of tactile diagrams. a. Material should be consistently formatted in braille to ease the student's task of quickly locating headings, directions, questions, answer choices, etc., according to the standardized rules. b. Restructure and render illustrative or diagrammatic information in a form intelligible to tactile discrimination (tactile graphics must simulate visual concepts of color, shading, depth, emphasis.) c. Transcribe material the student has brailled (e.g., often math) to print. 3. Proofread embossed/tactile material. Deliver the completed materials to teachers by the date requested, keeping the student concurrent with their peers. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Keep abreast of Code changes and addendums; review NBA publications and workshops for suggestions on difficult visual displays, i.e., tables, charts, graphs, puzzles, poetry, diacritics, advanced math, footnotes, etc. Attend NBA conferences whenever possible. 2. If necessary, braille those portions of needed textbooks which haven't yet arrived from PATTAN in accordance with BANA Formats Code. 3. Review brailled material from PATTAN for completeness as needed. 4. Aid in facilitating order, delivery, and collection of equipment and materials. 5. Be available to work extra hours as needed. 6. Attend meetings as required. 7. Arrive at the designated work site according to the established schedule and adhere to the established work schedule. 8. Starting annual salary: $32,452.00
The salary represents a 188-day work year. New employees who begin after the first day of the school year will have their salary prorated to the numbers of work days remaining in the school year.
Selected candidates for IU20 positions will be required to produce state mandated background clearances and fraud checks as part of the employment onboarding process. All recommendations for hire shall be contingent upon receipt of acceptable clearances and fraud checks. The clearances and checks will be treated confidentially.
