Job summary

Marshall County Schools in John Marshall High seeks a dedicated athletic coach for the 2026-2027 school year. The role involves planning, supervising practices and contests, and promoting a culture of sportsmanship and student achievement.

The position requires current CPR/AED certification, WVDE coaching credentials (or eligibility), and availability for practices and games as scheduled by school leadership. Compliance with policies is essential.

Qualifications

• Current CPR/AED certification required.
• Applicants must be fully credentialed professionals or substitutes or hold a WVDE coaching certification before participating in any WVSSAC sport coaching duties.
• Coaching duties must not interfere with other contracted duties and the successful applicant must be available for practice and game times as determined by the principal.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the assigned athletic program, including practices, contests, conditioning activities, team meetings, and related team events.
• Promote student safety, welfare, and appropriate conduct while students are under the coach's supervision, including before, during, and after practices, contests, travel, and team activities.
• Develop and maintain a positive team culture that emphasizes sportsmanship, respect, discipline, teamwork, and school pride.
• Support the educational mission of the school by encouraging academic success, appropriate behavior, responsible citizenship, and regular school attendance among student-athletes.
• Comply with all applicable board policies, administrative procedures, conference/league requirements, state athletic association rules, and federal/state laws governing student athletics.
• Communicate and work cooperatively with administrators, athletic personnel, students, parents/guardians, officials, other coaches, and the public to support the athletic program.
• Coordinate with coaches and athletic programs at other grade levels and schools, when applicable, to promote program continuity and student development.
• Supervise, account for, and help maintain equipment, uniforms, supplies, and assigned facilities in a safe, responsible, and organized manner.
• Provide appropriate leadership and direction to assistant coaches and volunteers assigned to the program, consistent with school expectations and administrative oversight.
• Maintain professional conduct, professional work habits, and positive public representation of the school and athletic program.
• Participate in required meetings, trainings, certifications, and professional development; maintain and improve coaching knowledge, skills, and required credentials.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the principal, athletic director, or other appropriate administrator.

Applicants must be fully credentialed professionals or substitutes or hold a valid WVDE coaching certification before participating in ANY WVSSAC sport coaching duties.

Coaching duties must not interfere with other contracted duties held by the successful applicant, and the successful applicant must be available for practice and game times and dates as determined by the principal. No names will be taken to the board for approval without valid certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Frequently stand, walk, move throughout indoor and outdoor athletic areas, and remain present for practices, contests, meetings, travel, and team activities.


• Communicate verbally and hear effectively in settings with moderate to high background noise, including gyms, fields, tracks, stadiums, locker rooms, sidelines, buses, and crowds.


• Use close, distance, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus to observe participants, monitor safety, evaluate techniques, and respond to game or practice conditions.


• Use hands and arms to handle equipment, demonstrate or support drills, distribute materials, operate communication devices, and perform routine coaching tasks.


• Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb stairs, and navigate uneven or changing surfaces such as fields, tracks, courts, dugouts, sidelines, bleachers, and locker-room areas.


• Occasionally demonstrates sport-specific techniques or movements and move quickly in response to play, supervision needs, weather, injury, or safety situations.


• Lift, carry, push, or pull athletic equipment and supplies generally up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance or appropriate equipment when needed.


• Maintain attention, judgment, situational awareness, and emotional control during routine and unexpected situations involving students, contests, travel, and athletic events.

Coaches new to MCS must prove their past coaching experience through verification of employment forms sent from previous employers to our payroll department.
