A leading environmental organization is seeking Botany Technicians for a 20-week appointment in Lee Vining, CA. Technicians will survey and monitor sensitive species, engage in outreach, and work in diverse outdoor environments. Responsibilities include data collection and analysis using GIS. The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, is recruiting 6 Botany Technicians to support the Carson City Field Office, located in Carson City/Reno, NV. Please note that this position will be physically located out of the Lee Vining Area in CA, near Yosemite National Park. Under the direction of BLM resource specialists, technicians will survey, map, assess, and monitor BLM sensitive species.
Botany technicians, working with BLM resource specialists, will survey, map, assess, and monitor BLM sensitive species. Responsibilities include recording habitat condition, plant diversity, invasive species, and impacts from livestock overgrazing and OHV damage. They will map noxious weeds, collect native seed for the SOS restoration program, and utilize mobile devices for data collection. Data will be synthesized with ancillary datasets, and management actions will be devised in collaboration with BLM biologists. All data will be entered into GIS databases, followed by analysis and reporting. Additional duties include environmental outreach with youth and adults.
Duties Include:
Ongoing projects require botanical fieldwork within the Carson City District, encompassing diverse landscapes such as coniferous forests, woodlands, sagebrush areas, salt deserts, and recovering wildfire zones.
Physical Demands: Work involves outdoor activities like walking, bending, climbing, lifting, and carrying equipment, often requiring camping for 1-3 nights at remote sites. Typical shifts are 8-10 hours within a 40-hour week.
Work Environment: Approximately 90% fieldwork on rough terrain with temperature variations from below freezing to over 90°F; 10% office work including GIS analysis, data entry, seed processing, report writing, and educational activities.
