Who are we looking for?

GHD is seeking a skilled and motivated Botanist/Wetland Specialist to join our US West Region Natural Resources and Impact Assessment (NR&IA) Group. This exciting opportunity involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of natural resources biologists, scientists, environmental planners, and engineers. Our group provides environmental and permitting services for a broad range of interesting clients and projects, working across multiple geographies.. Our work extends across a diverse range of market sectors, including coastal restoration, transportation (ports, road, rail, and transit), utilities, local development, energy, and mining.

This position can be located in any of our California offices (Irvine, San Diego, Long Beach, San Luis Obispo, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Roseville, Concord, Oakland or San Francisco)

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

  • Lead botany-related fieldwork, including:
    • Rare plant surveys
    • Restoration and mitigation monitoring
    • Habitat characterization and mapping, including Sensitive Natural Communities
  • Lead wetland delineations following state and federal guidelines.
  • Lead environmental field reviews in compliance with federal, state, and local agency requirements.
  • Conduct botanical database searches and prepare botanical reports, wetland delineation reports, and other biological resource sections for CEQA and NEPA documents.
  • Contribute to the development of mitigation monitoring plans and monitoring reports.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to achieve project goals.

What you will bring to the Team:

  • Proficiency in plant species-level and community-level identification with familiarity in using relevant plant and habitat reference materials.
  • Experience with habitat functional assessments.
  • Strong plant identification skills within a variety of ecosystems including wetlands, riparian, and grasslands. Familiarity with plant species in coastal areas and desert regions is a plus.
  • Familiar with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual and Regional Supplements. Familiarity with Arid West Region.
  • Knowledge of Aquatic Resource Delineation methods in desert environments is a plus.
  • Identification of OHWM, TOB, and associated jurisdictional habitats and waters of the U.S. and California following USACE, CDFW, and RWQCB regulatory guidelines.
  • Familiarity with current Section 404 and Section 401 Clean Water Act regulations, including regulatory and permitting mechanisms, and the overall permitting process.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience preparing biological resource assessments, constraints analyses, and CEQA/NEPA biological sections.
  • Proficient in writing technical reports for regulatory agency review, including CDFW, USFWS, RWQCB, and USACE.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in GPS, Microsoft Excel, other Office Suite software, and internet research applications.
  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS units, mapping habitats, and data collection with applications such as ESRI Field Maps and/or Survey123.
  • Statistical knowledge for restoration monitoring data analysis.
  • Ability to work effectively in rugged/remote backcountry and urban environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, Biology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in botanical and/or wetland-related work as outlined in the responsibilities above.
  • Minimum of two years of progressive responsibility and experience leading the completion of wetland and stream delineations in a consulting or similar professional setting, with demonstrated expertise in mapping waters of the U.S., waters of the State, and CDFW jurisdictional features.

Preferred Experience:

  • Knowledge of CEQA and NEPA compliance document preparation.
  • Knowledge of CDFW CNDDB and CNPS database tools.
  • Familiarity with federal and state regulations such as CEQA, CWA, ESA, and CESA.

Experience with other biological fieldwork, including nesting bird surveys and pre-construction and protocol-level surveys for special-status wildlife species, and construction monitoring is a plus.

Salary Range: $94,760- $142,140 based on experience.
