Job Description:
Boston.com and media researchers at Northeastern University's School of Journalism and Media Innovation are partnering on a project aimed at engaging younger audiences on digital platforms. We are now seeking early-career video storytellers to apply for a one-year funded fellowship in 2027.
The fellow will work across the Boston.com newsroom to cover local stories that align with our editorial mission: what Boston really cares about right now. We hope to strengthen communities with high-quality video journalism that meets the needs of the modern news consumer. The fellowship is funded in part by a generous grant of more than $3 million from the Stanton Foundation and Northeastern University.
Northeastern's Reinventing Local TV News Project (RLTVN) began in 2017 and has since completed three successful research phases. In Phase I, the Northeastern research team conducted a national survey that revealed a strong interest in local news among audiences but also identified the need for more engaging content. In Phase II, the team added advanced animation and graphics to newscasts and found that these innovations increased audience interest and comprehension. Phase III tested the Digital Content Creator role in three newsrooms and revealed how prioritizing digital content can increase engagement.
