Base Pay Range

$49,739.00/yr - $89,518.00/yr

Summary
  • Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive, paid in two installments: $10,000 upon completing the academy, and the remainder after three years of service. Agents choosing a prioritized location may receive an additional $10,000, totaling $30,000.
Duties

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeks individuals eager to protect American interests and secure our nation. DHS components work together to prevent terrorism, secure borders and transportation systems, protect dignitaries, enforce immigration laws, safeguard cyberspace, and ensure disaster resilience. As a Border Patrol Agent, you will:

  1. Detect and question persons suspected of violating laws, inspecting documents to determine citizenship or violations.
  2. Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, using surveillance and infrared scopes during night operations.
  3. Interpret tracks and physical evidence of illegal entries or contraband.
  4. Perform various patrols and checks using different transportation assets, including vehicles, horses, vessels, and off-road vehicles.

Salary levels are GL-5 or GL-7, with promotion potential to GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12. Pay depends on completion of pre-employment processes and is based on 2025 OPM Salary Tables.

Locations & Incentives

You will select your preferred duty location from various sectors across the U.S. Certain locations qualify for an additional $10,000 incentive, requiring a three-year service commitment. Locations include Presidio, Sanderson, Sierra Blanca, and others listed in the original description.

Requirements

Applicants must undergo a polygraph exam, complete intensive training at the Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, and meet age, firearm, and background requirements. The position requires carrying a firearm, speaking/readings Spanish and English, and adhering to grooming standards. Certain criminal backgrounds disqualify applicants.

Qualifications

Qualify at the GL-5 level with one year of general experience or education. For GL-7, specialized law enforcement experience or related education is required. Additional Information

Must be a U.S. citizen, pass medical and fitness exams, and meet residency and other legal requirements. The role is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions and involves mandatory drug testing and probationary periods.
