Qualifications

  • Ability to read gauges, meters, and charts for boiler performance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and climbing stairs/ladders.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of inspections and maintenance.
  • Position safety-sensitive and requires random drug testing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Operate steam boilers in Central Utility Plant to support campus utility demands.
  • Produce and distribute steam for HVAC and process equipment.
  • Use BAS to monitor and manage boiler operations.
  • Stage boilers according to steam load demands for efficiency.
  • Monitor boiler combustion to ensure energy efficiency.
  • Perform daily tasks including emissions monitoring and chemical treatment.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on boilers and water treatment systems.
  • Replenish consumables for steam production.
  • Test boiler water for conductivity, sulfite, alkalinity and hardness.
  • Operate and monitor centrifugal chillers and cooling towers.
  • Collaborate with in-house maintenance teams to resolve issues.
  • Maintain PPE and safety protocols at all times.
  • Maintain logs of operating levels, adjustments and repairs.
  • Monitor building automation and alarms remotely, including from home.
  • Provide on-site support during emergencies and severe weather.
  • Respond to 24-hour call-ins for alarms and breakdowns.

The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) mission is to support the NCI at Frederick in their mission to cure cancer and AIDS. FME is responsible for the physical campus - its research laboratory space, administrative space, the infrastructure that supports the buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. In addition, we are responsible for managing, planning, designing, and construction management of renovations at the FNLCR.

Key Roles/Responsibilities
  • Operate steam boilers in the Central Utility Plant (CUP) to support campus-wide utility demands.
  • Produce and distribute steam required for HVAC systems and process-related equipment.
  • Use building automation and control systems to monitor and manage boiler operations.
  • Stage boilers according to current steam load demands to ensure efficient performance.
  • Monitor and fine-tune boiler combustion controls to maintain energy-efficient operation.
  • Perform routine daily tasks, including emissions monitoring, chemical treatment, and boiler blowdown procedures.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on boilers, water treatment systems, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Replenish all consumables necessary for continued steam production.
  • Test boiler water for critical parameters such as conductivity, sulfite, alkalinity, and hardness to ensure system integrity.
  • Operate and monitor centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and chilled water supply systems.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with in-house maintenance teams as needed to resolve issues and support operational goals.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures, including the consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when entering sensitive or hazardous areas.
  • Maintain a log of operating levels, adjustments, repairs and preventive maintenance activities related to boiler/chiller operation and steam/chilled water production.
  • Monitor building automation and alarm systems remotely, including from home and during weekends.
  • Provide on-site operational support during emergencies and severe weather events to ensure continuity of operations.
  • Respond to 24-hour call-ins for alarm conditions and breakdowns related to steam and chilled water production.
  • Support the overall success of Facilities Management & Engineering (FME) by performing additional essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Possession of a high school diploma. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years of related experience is required.
  • Possession of a State of Maryland Grade 1 Stationary Engineering License.
  • Ability to observe and interpret readings from gauges, meters, and charts related to boiler performance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Physical ability to routinely lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb stairs and ladders, and perform tasks involving bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces. May involve exposure to particulates, vapors, or high-noise environments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities to support performance tracking and compliance.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing per the Leidos Biomedical Research Drug Free Workplace Program.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of building steam and HVAC utilities and plant equipment in commercial /industrial facilities that require pressurized steam for proper operation.
  • OSHA10 certification.
  • Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS).
