Job description

This position has a residency waiver and is open to applications from both residents and non-residents of Colorado. It is open to all legal residents of the United States. Applicants from outside Colorado must relocate at their own expense prior to starting if appointed. This recruitment may fill multiple vacancies.

Division of Facilities Management - Northern Division

The Division of Facilities Management is responsible for planning, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and managing CDHS facilities and campuses to promote safety, sanitation, and an effective environment for clients, youth, residents, consumers, and staff, enhancing quality of life across facilities.

Facilities managed include the Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan, Department of Human Services headquarters, Wheat Ridge Regional Center, and Division of Youth Services facilities, covering approximately 1.9 million sq. ft. across multiple sites. The unit supports the Veterans Community Living Center as needed.

Position Overview

This role involves operating and maintaining the physical plant equipment within the Central Heat Plant, including performing operational functions, maintenance, repairs, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Responsibilities include monitoring systems such as EMS, fire alarms, dispatch duties, and administrative documentation.

Primary Job Duties
  1. Operate and maintain high-temperature hot water generators using natural gas and diesel, analyzing process fluids.
  2. Manage environmental emission control systems to ensure safety.
  3. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance following established guidelines.
  4. Maintain cleanliness of the plant.
  5. Ensure proper operation of plant machinery and troubleshoot issues.
  6. Monitor and operate equipment including generators, pumps, piping, and control systems.
  7. Support emergency and routine operations across various facilities and sites.
  8. Answer phones, dispatch personnel, and coordinate emergency responses.
  9. Operate emergency generators and maintain grounds and equipment as needed.
  10. Conduct water testing and chemical treatments.
  11. Perform snow removal and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Four years of experience in boiler operations, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance.
Substitution
  • Education or apprenticeship training related to the position can substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Attach transcripts or certification as proof.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Valid Stationary Engineer License “A”, ASOPE, or equivalent (must be attached to application).
  • Experience with high-pressure coal-fired steam boilers.
Conditions of Employment
  • Background check required; disqualifications include certain convictions.
  • Willingness to receive annual influenza vaccination or provide exemption documentation.
  • TB testing required.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • License/certification must be obtained within 9 months of hire.
  • Travel to various facilities is required, with exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is mandatory.
