Responsibilities

  • Clean boilers periodically, inspect for defects, disassemble/reassemble parts for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Maintain freeze protection system and respond to alarms from automated systems.
  • Perform routine repairs on boilers, related equipment, and power plant fixtures; replace packing and worn parts.
  • Oversee minor repairs and component replacements; assist in major repairs as directed by supervisor.
  • Record readings from gauges and instrumentation; monitor controls to maintain desired levels.
  • Shift systems: change fuel type when required; maintain chemical treatment to protect boilers and piping.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Description

Youwill have an assorted amount of work as a boiler operator who isresponsible for covering both of our campus locations. You willhave the opportunity to broaden your skillsets with the CampusFacilities Department as you will work side by side with otherskilled trades such as HVAC, electrical and plumbing when needed. Perform skilled work primarily involving maintenance, repair, andoperation of boilers and other equipment related to heating andcooling. Review is accomplished through occasional spot-checkingand observation of work for overall effectiveness. Functionalcontacts are limited primarily to co-workers with occasionalcontact with other University staff.

  • Periodically clean boilers inside and out, removing soot andother residue from floors, firesides, and boiler tubes, usingelectric tube cleaners, water hoses, and other hand tools. Inspectfor excessive scaling, cracks or other defects. Disassemble andreassemble such parts as necessary to facilitate cleaning of theboiler and its working parts. Take boiler off line preparatory tooverhaul and places boiler back online on completion of maintenanceand repair.
  • Maintain freeze protection system. Maintain and properlyrespond to alarms from the automated system. May be required to evacuate a building in the event of a dangerous situationequipment, and painting floors, pipes, fixtures, and equipment inthe power plant.
  • Check boilers on a day-to-day basis for proper functioning,detection of leaks or other problems, replaces or does minorrepairs on defective or damaged parts. Make routine repairs onboilers, related equipment, and power plant fixtures. Replacepacking, and some worn parts. Periodically overhaul solenoids,fans, and repairs leaks in water and steam lines and assist inmajor repairs as directed by your supervisor. Perform variouscleaning and maintenance duties such as sweeping, dusting,vacuuming, lubricating equipment, and painting floors, pipes,fixtures, and equipment in the power plant.
  • May relieve or substitute for other positions performing allroutine duties regularly assigned to such positions, typicallyinvolving maintenance duties. Read and record information fromvarious gauges and instrumentation devices; manipulate controls toattain desired level.
  • Must be able to change system from gas fuel to fuel oil whenrequired by the gas company. Maintain chemical treatment of boilersto keep boilers and pipes from deteriorating and as energyefficient as possible.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
