Job Title: Estimator

Department: Body Shop

Reports To: Body Shop Manager

Summary

Appraises vehicle damage to determine the cost of repair for insurance claim settlement.

Essential Duties
  • Examines damaged vehicle to determine the extent of structural, body, mechanical, or interior damage.
  • Estimates the cost of labor and parts to repair or replace each damaged item.
  • Determines the feasibility of repair versus replacement of parts, such as bumpers, fenders, and doors.
  • Evaluates the practicality of repair as opposed to payment of the vehicle's market value before the accident.
  • Prepares insurance forms to indicate repair cost estimates and recommendations.
  • Estimates costs for repainting, converting to special purposes, or customizing undamaged vehicles.
  • Maintains good working relationships with insurance adjusters.
  • Establishes and maintains good relationships with customers to encourage repeat and referral business.
  • Follows up on parts department orders to ensure parts availability.
  • Monitors progress and completion of assigned vehicles in the shop, ensuring proper repair procedures are followed.
  • Checks the quality of completed work.
  • Monitors paperwork to ensure all documents are complete, legible, and properly filed or distributed.
  • Prepares final billing for completed repair orders.
  • Controls assigned accounts receivables for body repair work.
  • Completes ICAR training classes as required.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED, with 1 to 2 years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Skills

Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Effective speaking skills for communicating with customers and employees. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to understand and carry out instructions, solve practical problems, interpret technical instructions, and draw valid conclusions from data.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Valid Driver's License. Manufacturer’s training.

Physical Demands

Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, handle, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and extreme heat. Noise level is usually very loud.
