Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, seeks an Assistant Civil Engineer to support the Bridge Management Section in identifying rehabilitation, replacement, and capital needs for NYC’s bridge assets at 55 Water St, Manhattan.

Under supervision, you will review inspection reports, load ratings, and inventory data to help set project priorities and assist in cost estimates and budget reports.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  • A bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing bridge inspection reports, inventory data, and condition ratings to determine project needs.
  • Assist in developing scoping documents, cost estimates, and capital planning materials.
  • Support budget reports and coordination with other bridge units and capital delivery groups.

IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION CANDIDATE MUST BE SERVING PERMANENTLY IN THE TITLE, OR MUST HAVE FILED FOR THE UPCOMING EXAM # 7006, AND PROVIDE PROOF OF FILING.

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City.

Under supervision, serves as an Assistant Civil Engineer in the Bridge Management Section of the Bureau of Bridge Maintenance, Inspections, and Operations, Division of Bridges. The Division is responsible for the safety, reliability, and long-term serviceability of New York City’s bridge infrastructure. Within the Division, the Bridge Management Section connects bridge inspection findings, load rating results, asset inventory, maintenance needs, and engineering evaluations with long-term capital planning. The selected candidate will support the Scoping Unit in identifying bridge rehabilitation, replacement, and component rehab needs, and assisting in the development of project scoping documents, cost estimates, capital planning materials, and related budget reports. The selected candidate will assist senior engineering staff in reviewing bridge inspection reports, inventory data, condition ratings, maintenance records, and other available information to help determine project needs and priorities. The position provides valuable exposure to bridge asset management, project scoping, capital program development, budget coordination, and coordination with other bridge units and capital delivery groups.

Qualifications
  1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
