Organizational Summary
Soccer Without Borders (SWB) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing under-served youth in the U.S. and abroad with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success. Our programs provide youth who are traditionally excluded from extracurricular opportunities with a platform for positive engagement, an avenue for personal growth and a toolkit for a brighter future.
Position Summary
The Treasurer is responsible for stewarding SWB’s resources. The Treasurer ensures records are maintained, reviews financial reports prepared by staff, and interacts with accountants and auditors to help keep the board informed of financial matters. The Treasurer is the leader of the Finance Committee, which currently includes three other active members, two of whom are previous treasurers. They sit for a two-year term that can be renewed for one additional two-year term.
SWB has seen 100% growth over the last 3 years. With 2026 as our 20th anniversary, and a year in which the World Cup will be hosted in North America, we anticipate continued growth.
Key Responsibilities of a Board Treasurer
During board/committee meetings
- Serve as chair of the finance committee which meets approximately eight times a year. Three meetings clustered around budgeting in late June through July 31. Work with committee chairs and/or board members to address any red flags identified in quarterly/monthly financial reports and answer questions regarding such reports. Present annual budget to the board for approval in late July in order that it is passed before the start of the next fiscal year. (Fiscal year is August 1 through July 31)
- Attend Board meetings. Eight currently per year. One in person, rest over zoom.
- Attend annual meeting with Auditors, ideally in early December, so that the audit is approved by the full board before the end of the year.
- Oversee investments and reserve accounts including the nature of such (most reserves currently invested short term Treasury bills).
- Approve transfers in and out of accounts, at the request of the Managing Director of Finance & Operations or Executive Director. Currently another Board member processes the reserve account transactions.
- Sit on the Executive Committee that meets approximately eight – ten times a year.
- Maintain a regular cadence of meetings with the Managing Director of Finance and Operations and the Executive Director to ensure streamlined delivery of job duties
Outside of board meetings
- Review monthly financial reports, compare expenses with budgets and income, and identify and anticipate problem areas
- Interact with accountants and auditors to help keep the board informed of financial matters
- Assist the Executive Director and the Managing Director of Finance and Operations in preparing the annual budget
- Review the annual audit
- Ensure that assets are protected and invested according to organizational policy
- Be available to provide guidance to staff or make connections to strengthen the financial acumen of the staff and organization.
Board Treasurer Qualifications
- Understanding of financial accounting for nonprofit organizations
- Knowledge of financial reports and the organization’s record-keeping and accounting systems. (Quickbooks Online Advanced)
- Ability and willingness to work with Managing Director of Finance and Operations, accountant, Finance Coordinator, and auditors as necessary
- Preferred experience with organizations with a budget size between $5M - $15M per year
