Job description

KCI is a 501v(3) nonprofit organization that supports low-income expectant families and families with children from birth through five years of age by providing preschool, child care, and home visiting services in the Anchorage community. Head Start programs use a whole-family approach that offers services to both children and their families. We envision a future where every child leaves our program with 100% of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for optimal learning and development. We achieve this by partnering with families, investors, and our local community to provide comprehensive, high-quality services that ensure children are safe, healthy, learning, and engaged in positive relationships.

Purpose: To serve the board as a voting member, to assist in the development of and then approve policies, procedures and regulations to govern the operations of KCI nonprofit, to monitor the finances, programs and performance of the organization. Hiring an administrator, planning, monitoring and advocating are the four primary responsibilities of the board.

  • Regularly attend scheduled meetings (about 6 per year)
  • Attend meetings of committees served (about 4/year)
  • Attend board retreats, planning sessions, and board development workshops
  • Attend and participate in special events or trainings

Obligations of the Board:

  • Establish policy with the direct involvement of the Policy Council
  • Hire, fire (if necessary), supervise and annually evaluate the administrator
  • Secure adequate funds, including making an annual personal gift
  • Safeguard federal grant funds and resources by establishing effective financial procedures and regularly monitoring accurate financial reports
  • Provide overall direction for the organization by creating strategic goals and objectives and monitoring progress in meeting them

Specific Duties:

  • Attend meetings, participate and show commitment to board activities
  • Serve on an agency self-assessment or advisory committee
  • Be well informed and prepared for meetings
  • Contribute skills, knowledge and experience when appropriate.
  • Listen respectfully to other viewpoints
  • Assume leadership roles in all board activities, including fund raising
  • Represent the nonprofit to the public, businesses and the community
  • Educate yourself about the needs of the people whom KCI serves
