Job summary

Michael Foods, Inc. is seeking a hands-on team member to care for laying hens in our facility. You will ensure water, feed, environment, and general house upkeep to promote animal welfare and product quality.

Responsibilities include daily record-keeping, coordinating with coworkers, and performing routine maintenance. No prior experience is required; training provided. The role involves physical tasks and exposure to dusty conditions; ability to lift up to 50 pounds is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Provide water, feed, proper temperature, clean house, and general care for laying hens.
• Keep daily records on water, feed, mortality, ventilation, and maintenance (UEP).
• Work closely with coworkers, leads, supervisors, and maintenance.
• Move birds in and out of houses and maintain population counts.
• Keep feed chains and egg belts in working order; ensure lights are functional.
• Keep floor litter dry and maintained (within 1 inch).
• Turn houses over when flocks leave or arrive.
• Keep stairs and aisles clean and clear of hazards.
• Maintain fans, motors, and screens with shields/guards.
• Perform daily mortality runs and weekend bird runs as assigned.
• Report problems to lead or supervisor and follow safety procedures.
• Adhere to Animal Humane policies and procedures.

Location Description

Michael Foods, Inc., located in Bloomfield, Nebraska, is one of our only cage free facilities. The facility is located three miles outside of Northeast Nebraska's busiest community. Bloomfield is a haven for those who prefer small-town life over city living and is located less than 30 miles from recreation areas where you can enjoy fishing, boating, kayaking and camping. Our location produces liquid egg product that is sent to our other facilities for further processing.

Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for working with all aspects of our layers houses to include providing an excellent environment and quality care for our laying hens.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Responsible for making sure the chickens have the proper amount of water, feed, proper temperature, clean house, etc.
• Responsible for keeping daily UEP records on water, feed, mortality, ventilation, and maintenance.
• Must work closely with coworkers, leads, supervisors, and maintenance.
• Responsible for moving birds in and out of houses and keeping accurate population.
• Responsible for keeping all feed chains and egg belts in working order.
• Responsible for keeping all lights replaced and in working order.
• Responsible for keeping floor litter dry and maintained to 1 inch.
• Responsible for turning houses over when a flock is leaving and coming in.
• Keeping all stairs and aisles clean and clear of trip hazards.
• To keep all fans, motors, and screens clean and protected with shields or guards.
• Responsible for doing a daily mortality run in your house and the extra house during the weekdays and doing bird runs in up to two houses on the weekends.
• All maintenance and repair work are to be done immediately, if problems arise, contact your lead person or supervisor.
• Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
• Adhere to all Animal Humane policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

No prior experience or training.

Experience:

Previous experience with animal care is preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add and subtract numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.
