Job summary

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is seeking a Block Operator Trainee to ensure safe and efficient movement of trains in accordance with operating rules. The position is part of the LIRR with various shifts and locations across the system.

The role requires a four-year high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and strong written and verbal communication. Training spans multiple weeks, with progressive wage steps through the program and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • Four-year high school diploma or educational equivalent (GED/TASC) approved by a state education authority.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence.
  • Ability to clearly convey shift transfer information (oral and written).
  • Ability to read and interpret operating rules and write train orders/reports.

Responsibilities

  • Care and operation of block/interlocking stations, towers, and supplies.
  • Ensure safe movement of trains and delivery of train orders per instructions.
  • Promptly record and report train movements verbally or by computer.
  • Operate power control boards and movable bridges when in tower.
  • Operate switches, signals, and bridges to regulate traffic.
  • Arrange use of blocks, tracks, and signals for safe, efficient travel.
