Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science or related field.
• Minimum one year of experience working with biological samples.
• Knowledge of GCP, HIPAA, IATA or related regulatory training.

Responsibilities

Description

The Biorepository Bioanalyte Specialist 1 (BAS 1) supports the operational, analytical, and technical functions of the Tampa General Hospital/USF Health Precision Medicine Biorepository (PMBioR) by assisting in the processing, handling, and maintenance of biological analytes and associated specimens. Contributes to accurate sample tracking, high‑quality analyte preparation, and adherence to biospecimen integrity standards essential to the success of clinical and translational research programs at Tampa General Hospital and its Cancer Institute. Working under general supervision and following established policies, procedures, and professional guidelines, the BAS 1 performs routine analyte processing tasks, including preparation, aliquoting, labeling, and storage of biological materials. Assists with basic equipment maintenance used in analytical workflows and supports compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality‑control requirements. Responsibilities include accurate documentation, data entry, and sample tracking within laboratory information systems, with timely communication of discrepancies or issues to senior staff. Plays an important role in daily biorepository operations by supporting entry‑level complexity and moderate workflows, contributing to efficient and accurate specimen processing. Works closely with Biorepository staff, faculty members of the Departments of Pathology, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Nursing, as well as TGH CI leadership, faculty, and other staff to promote daily productivity and ensure successful execution of assigned responsibilities in a professional manner. Strong attention to detail, the ability to follow SOPs, and foundational experience with specimen handling and laboratory data systems are essential.

Essential Functions

• Preparation, preservation, and storage of multiple high quality bioanalytes, including but not limited to serum, plasma, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, cell pellets, cultures, genomic DNA, total RNA and protein from whole blood, fresh and flash frozen tissue specimens, FFPE and Slide procurement.
• Process, prepare, aliquot, and label biological analytes according to established protocols, ensuring strict adherence to sample integrity standards. Ensure compliance with all safety, biospecimen handling, and regulatory standards.
• Receive, catalog, and store biospecimens and analytes within the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with precision and accuracy.
• Operate, maintain, and perform routine calibration of laboratory instruments and analytical equipment.
• Record and maintain detailed, accurate, and consistent documentation for all assigned clinical studies, including regulatory compliance documentation, laboratory activities, data, and results.
• Ensure timely execution of day‑to‑day biorepository operations necessary to meet TGH Cancer Institute (CI) programmatic goals.
• Serve as a liaison and representative of CI Biorepository Research with external partners, including the National Cancer Institute, academic cancer centers, universities, and other research sponsors.
• Maintaining up to date certification and training with human subjects research practices, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), HIPAA, Shipment of Biological Specimens (IATA) and/or other topics as required by TGH and TGH CI leadership.
• Promote a positive and professional image of the department and organization through communication, conduct, and adherence to institutional standards.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Work Experience

• Minimum one (1) year of experience working with biological samples and processing.
• An equivalent combination of education/certification(s) and realized competencies may be considered.

Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated ability to understand and implement scientific protocols as directed.
• Work requires practical and basic theoretical knowledge to perform these techniques and to modify them as needed, in consultation with the principal investigator or designee.
• Ability to perform a variety of lab and/or field experiments which require competency with standard scientific techniques and equipment in disciplines such as molecular biology, microbiology, genomics, physiology, and pathology/microscopy.
• Ability to work with spreadsheets (such as Excel), familiarity with databases (ex: Medidata RAVE, iMedra, Velos, etc.) and querying.
• Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
• Exceptional attention to detail and excellent technical problem-solving skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and be flexible to manage multiple tasks.
