SUMMARY:
The Biomedical Equipment Technician is responsible for the maintenance, inspection, and repair of medical equipment in various healthcare settings, including operating rooms, emergency departments, and other patient care areas. Working under general supervision, this role supports the reliability, safety, and effectiveness of biomedical devices by performing routine maintenance, assisting with repairs, and ensuring equipment is functioning according to established standards. This position may require travel to multiple sites within the healthcare system based on operational needs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Diagnose and repair medical equipment issues with limited supervision in both workshops and clinical care environments.
• Document maintenance and repair activities and promptly update records in the department’s maintenance database.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on assigned medical equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.
• Repair and calibrate life support and other critical medical equipment and systems.
• Service and maintain anesthesia machines, mechanical ventilators, electrosurgical units, and patient monitoring systems.
• Maintain and repair ECG and EEG equipment, defibrillators, blood pressure monitors, and diagnostic ultrasound systems.
• Support the maintenance of infusion pumps, dialysis systems, stress test systems, and other patient care equipment.
• Install and support devices that interface medical equipment data with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Respond to equipment recalls and corrective actions in a timely manner to support patient and staff safety.
• Inspect and document equipment involved in actual or suspected adverse patient events, following established protocols.
• Assist with the configuration and maintenance of alarm systems and related interface equipment.
• Monitor incoming service requests, prioritize tasks based on urgency, and record all work in the maintenance ticketing system.
• Communicate effectively with clinical staff to provide updates on equipment status, estimated completion times, and to address concerns professionally.
• Educate clinical users on the basic operation and care of medical devices.
• Demonstrate proper setup and function of medical equipment to end users as needed.
• Participate in equipment installation projects by assisting with equipment selection, site preparation, coordination with contractors, and basic setup tasks.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Foundational knowledge of electronic theory, including digital systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair a variety of medical devices.
• Familiarity with the use of electronic test equipment and tools.
• Knowledge of medical and physiological terminology.
• Ability to follow preventive maintenance procedures and document findings accurately.
• Ability to maintain reports utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
• Basic knowledge of IT terminology, setup, and configuration.
• Ability to follow technical instructions, safety protocols, and work effectively in clinical environments.
• Willingness to obtain and maintain necessary certifications and training relevant to assigned equipment.
•Ability to remotely troubleshoot and resolve technical issues by guiding non-technical or clinical staff through diagnostic and corrective steps.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Associate’s degree in Electronics, Biomedical Engineering, or related field; or
• Two (2) years of experience in lieu of education.
• One (1) year of experience (or three without a degree) in biomedical equipment repair.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certified or must be obtained within thirty (30) days of hire
