Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine seeks an experienced Scientific/Technical Writer to support Pauley Heart Center faculty in developing high-quality biomedical research proposals and related materials. This role focuses on NIH grant submissions, graphical content, and regulatory documents, with on-site work in Richmond, VA.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing or related field, or other equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency with graphical tools for scientific figure creation (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, BioRender, or similar).
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the development of competitive research proposals for federal NIH and other sponsors.
  • Assist with written materials to support funding requests for clinical, education/training and research initiatives.
  • Draft, edit, and coordinate required proposal components (Specific Aims, Research Strategy, Abstracts, Facilities & Resources, Data Sharing Plans, Human Subjects docs).
  • Assist faculty with preparation of biosketches, CVs and Other Support documents.
  • Ensure proposals comply with agency guidelines, formatting requirements, and submission policies.
  • Collaborate with faculty and grants administration to align content with funding priorities.
  • Create high-quality scientific graphics, figures, and visual schematics for proposals.
  • Translate complex concepts into clear visual representations meeting NIH/journal standards.
  • Review FOAs/RFAs/Program Announcements and target opportunities for faculty.
  • Advise on funding mechanisms (R01, R21, PPG, PCORI, K awards) relevant to scope and career stage.
  • Assist investigators in aligning project concepts with agency missions and review criteria.
  • Write, edit, and standardize research protocols for studies; develop MOPs and SOPs.
  • Maintain SOPs to support regulatory compliance and reproducibility.
  • Collaborate to ensure documents are accurate, clear and compliant.
