Job summary

Axle in Bethesda, MD is seeking a Part-Time Machine Shop Manager Biomedical Engineer to support the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at NIH. You will design, manufacture, test custom parts and instruments, and oversee machine shop operations, safety, and user training.

The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s in materials engineering or related field with 10+ years of hands-on machining experience, and demonstrates strong collaboration with researchers and QA processes.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in materials engineering, materials science, or another engineering field.
• Minimum of 10 years of work experience.
• Experience designing and building scientific instrumentation with scientists and engineers.
• Proficiency with machining and fabrication including mills, lathes, drill presses, and band saws.
• Knowledge of QA and industry best practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Perform validation activities as needed.
• Maintain machine shop in working order through weekly deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Consult with researchers and engineers on instrumentation needs and draft parts using CAD.
• Design and fabricate mechanical, electromechanical, optical, and hydraulic instruments for research and clinical applications.
• Manufacture and repair lab equipment parts and tooling fixtures.
• Evaluate design alternatives based on materials and machining capabilities.
• Interpret blueprints to fabricate or repair equipment using hand and power tools.
• Maintain and repair electronic and mechanical components.
• Plan and carry out equipment modifications based on performance after initial use.
• Maintain and organize the machine shop and ensure safety compliance.
• Train users in safe equipment operation and assist with device fabrication.
