The Biology Department at the University of Virginia’s College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, seeks applications for a Laboratory Specialist Intermediate to oversee the day-to-day operations of Biology’s model organism (MO) kitchen, a new core facility that will serve the needs of ten labs in Biology and five labs in the School of Medicine. The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
- Preparation and distribution of a variety of media types needed to successfully culture and maintain Drosophila (fruit fly) and C. elegans (nematode worm) colonies.
- Precisely follow all provided recipes and protocols with extreme care and attention to ensure that media and other requested reagents are of the highest quality.
- Media preparation.
- Deliver orders to participating labs.
- Maintain inventory of consumables and non-consumables.
- Order supplies.
- Maintain all records for billing.
- Assist with supervision of undergraduate assistants.
- Maintain clear lines of communication with participating labs.
- Coordinate deliveries with individual labs.
- Ensure tracking and collection of glassware or reusable plasticware sent out to labs for washing and reuse.
- Participate in formulating research methods, suggesting options for improving quality, and recommending solutions.
- Participate in computer database design, utilization, and research/data analyses, and suggest future improvements to track and manage data entries.
- Oversee day-to-day operation of projects.
- Schedule and maintain records of equipment/facilities.
- May be responsible for operations of specialized labs or research areas within departments and/or field work and related data analyses for research projects.
- May assemble, test, calibrate, clean, or make minor repairs to equipment.
- Train users in equipment operation and research techniques; and explain and demonstrate technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations, and outcomes.
- Work independently on collection of data and analyze research results.
- Confer with PIs in developing plans for research projects and discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication.
- May supervise research support personnel and manage budgets.
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements:Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: Four years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. Eight years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
Preferred experience:- Experience working in a commercial kitchen or research environment.
- Supervisory experience.
- Experience with spreadsheets, ordering, budget management.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to effectively incorporate feedback.
