Biologist – Mid/Senior-level
General position summary:

Since 1921, Mason, Bruce, & Girard, Inc., (MB&G) has provided natural resource consulting services to clients in the private and public sector. Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, we are a multidisciplinary firm specializing in forestry, environmental, and geospatial services. MB&G’s Environmental Services group is excited to add an experienced mid to senior level Biologist to our group of prominent environmental professionals. Our staff enjoy supporting clients throughout the Pacific Northwest on a variety of public and private projects that include field surveys, permitting related to environmental regulatory compliance, and instream and upland mitigation and restoration. This position will serve as a technical expert and a project manager, performing both field and office-based work involving report preparation, and project and client management. In addition to project management, duties will also include report writing and analysis, supervising staff who are supporting your work, and agency/client coordination/communication. Candidates should have a background in either biology, environmental science, environmental regulatory compliance, or a related field.

  • Performs a variety of work that may require travel throughout the Portland metro area. Overnight travel may be occasionally required.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the environmental regulatory process required to comply with local, state, and federal laws within the state of Oregon including, but not limited to, the National Environmental Protection Act, Clean Water Act (CWA), and the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA).
  • Provides background research and serve as a lead author for technical documents (e.g., Biological Assessments, Biological Evaluations, Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Impact Reports).
  • Serves as a project manager, leading staff to complete a project within budget and schedule expectations.
  • Mentors staff to prepare permit applications and other environmental documentation that meet industry standards.
  • Understands and performs work using the correct level of effort appropriate for the scope, budget, and overall expectations.
  • Successfully leads business development activities to secure work for yourself and others.
  • Responsible for accurate recording of notes and documentation for all client projects.
  • Performs work with a high level of integrity.
Education and/or Experience:
  • B.S. Biology or equivalent or B.S. with a minimum of 10 years of experience as a Biologist, Environmental Planner, Environmental Regulatory Compliance Specialist, or equivalent.
  • Oregon environmental permitting experience including experience as a lead author preparing documents to comply with NEPA, the ESA, and the CWA.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience serving as a project manager for projects involving environmental permitting and associated documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to both work independently and/or successfully lead a team through all stages of a project from design to completion.
  • Experience leading staff to perform field surveys within proper protocols.
  • Experience leading staff to prepare technical reports and permit applications that meet regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Manage successful relationships with clients, stakeholders, regulators, and teaming partners.
  • Create scopes of work reflecting an appropriate amount of time and understanding the process needed to complete a project.
  • Demonstrated success securing new contracts through business development activities.
Conditions

This is a remote office-based position that may include field work depending on the individual’s qualifications. It is anticipated that field work would compromise approximately 5-10% of the workload for this position during the spring and summer months, if appropriate. This position also involves extensive computer use, physical ability to operate a telephone, and sitting for extended periods of time.
