Job summary

DeepMind Technologies Limited in Mountain View, CA seeks a biologist/microbiologist Subject Matter Expert for the CBRNE team. The role focuses on model-assisted development and dissemination of harmful biological agents and dual-use entities, serving as a technical expert within the Responsible Frontier AI Research (RFAIR) team.

The successful applicant will be hired as a Research Scientist, providing expert input on evaluation frameworks and mitigations for frontier AI models used in biology.

Qualifications

• PhD in wet-lab virology, microbiology, biology, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 3 years of wet-lab experience with dual-use research, consequence pathogens, or biological toxins.
• Experience across microbiology, virology, host-pathogen interactions, etc., evidenced by publications or equivalent.
• Experience applying biosecurity and biosafety concepts, incl. misuse scenarios.
• Experience utilizing AI models to analyze and mitigate biological risks.
• Experience in cross-functional collaboration and communicating to global audiences.

Responsibilities

• Test, evaluate, and mitigate harmful capabilities of frontier AI models in biology.
• Design, develop, and execute biology evaluations, frameworks, and red-teaming strategies.
• Collaborate with CBRNE/responsibility engineers to balance safety and scientific utility.
• Partner with experts in CBRN, AI ethics, policy, and safety.
• Support development of Google’s CBRNE safety policy and communicate risks and mitigations.
