Job summary

Google DeepMind is seeking a Computational Biologist SME for the CBRNE team within the Responsible Frontier AI Research group. You will evaluate and mitigate safety risks of frontier AI models in biology, including dual-use concerns and model uplift scenarios.

Role emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional teams, policy alignment, and clear risk communication to leadership and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

• PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience applying computational tools, modeling, and CLI scripts to analyze protein biochemistry, microbiology, or pathogenic systems.
• Experience working with biological datasets (genomics, proteomics, structural biology).
• Experience evaluating emerging technologies and assessing biorisk or misuse scenarios.
• Experience with peer-reviewed contributions and cross-functional teams.
• Experience supporting a secure, global research environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop assessments to quantify capability thresholds, technical feasibility, and potential consequences of model uplift.
• Design and execute robust evaluations and datasets of computational biology and microbiology to assess model behavior.
• Partner with responsibility engineers to design mitigations that block harmful outputs without harming scientific utility.
• Support ongoing development and refinement of Google’s CBRNE safety policy and communicate risks to stakeholders.
