Salary: The expected academic base salary range for this position is: $75,000-$110,000.

We are recruiting a Biological Electron Microscopy Specialist to join the team at the Integrated Imaging Center (IIC) at Johns Hopkins University. The IIC houses approximately 40 instruments that are available for use by both JHU researchers and external scientists. The facility has a user base of about 500 from approximately 100 research groups across more than 20 departments and research institutes at JHU, as well as some external customers. The facility provides access to its instruments and the staff provide support and training to our user base, with users expected to perform most operations themselves.

This position will report to Dr. Ian Dobbie, Director of the Integrated Imaging Center, and have responsibility for supporting the biological electron microscopy provision within the facility. The facility currently has 3 TEMs and an ESEM as well as a range of standard sample preparation equipment such as critical point dryer, evaporator, sputter coater and ultra-microtomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Train and support users on both TEM and SEM instruments.
  • Train and support users on biological sample preparation for electron microscopy including fixation, embedding, sectioning, negative staining and sputter coating.
  • Provide expert advice to users on the best experimental approaches to specific research questions.
  • Provide advice and training to users on image analysis approaches to extract scientific data from EM images.
  • Maintain the instruments for electron microscopy within the facility including both microscopes and sample preparation equipment. This includes performing minor maintenance tasks and managing vendor service visits for more serious issues.
  • Maintain consumables and other required supplies for sample preparation and imaging needs, including ordering supplies when needed.
  • May assist in with the procurement of laboratory equipment/supplies, that includes ordering, billing, materials transfer agreements and other relevant office management.
  • May contribute to writing of manuscripts and grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in biological electron microscopy including a range of sample preparation techniques and using EMs for imaging. They will also have experience of working within a facility, bringing a customer focused approach to best serve our extensive and varied user base. The position requires strong technical skills and a collaborative, people focused approach. Candidate should have a PhD in biology, chemistry or related field, or equivalent experience.

Required skills:

  • Experience in biological electron microscopy.
  • Experience in biological sample preparations for electron microscopy.
  • Computer literate, able to use standard EM control software and image analysis tools.
  • The ability to work well in a team and a multi-disciplinary environment.

Preferred skills:

  • Extensive skills in biological sample preparation.
  • Experience in cryoEM imaging and data processing.
