Job summary

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) invites applications for an Academic Graduate Appointee in Bioengineering and Advanced Manufacturing. The role spans design, fabrication, testing, and characterization of bioengineered materials and devices in a multidisciplinary setting.

You will work on bioprinted tissue constructs, organ-on-a-chip systems, and multi-material hydrogels, with hands-on lab experience across bioengineering, materials science, and microfabrication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, biology, or related field.
  • Experience or coursework in biomaterials, tissue engineering, microfluidics, organ-on-a-chip systems, or additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with hydrogel or bioink formulation and characterization.
  • Familiarity with 3D bioprinting, preferably DLP bioprinting.
  • Experience with sterile mammalian cell culture and aseptic techniques.
  • Familiarity with biomaterials characterization methods like rheology, microscopy, immunostaining, or cell-viability assays.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and document results.

Responsibilities

  • Assist design, fabrication, and evaluation of bioprinted tissue constructs and organ-on-a-chip devices.
  • Prepare bioinks, hydrogels, cells, and test structures for experiments.
  • Support DLP bioprinting of multi-material hydrogel constructs.
  • Maintain sterile cell culture under aseptic conditions.
  • Characterize biomaterials using rheology, swelling, microscopy, and assays.
  • Document data in notebooks and reports; assist with procedures and reports.
  • Contribute to literature reviews, presentations, and publications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
