Job summary

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking an expert-level professional to manage statewide engineering design software, CAD workspaces, and digital delivery initiatives. You will lead Bentley applications, provide training, and ensure alignment with UDOT standards.

Responsibilities include maintaining ORD/OBM/ProStructures, supporting ProjectWise, and coordinating with teams and vendors to enhance model-based delivery and collaboration across projects.

Qualifications

  • Registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • At least two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field AND six (6) years of professional experience in CADD, software development, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Modeler, ProStructures and ProjectWise workspaces and workflows.
  • Provide training and technical support on digital delivery tools to project teams.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and vendors to align CAD standards with department goals.
  • Evaluate software needs and implement best practices for BIM, digital delivery, and construction workflows.
  • Oversee planning, prioritization, and progress of engineering software programs.

About the Role

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking an expert-level individual in engineering design software and tools to manage statewide and programmatic responsibilities.

Position Information
  • This position is open to both licensed engineers and non‑engineers.
  • Salary Range: Based on qualifications.
  • FT/PT Status: Full Time
  • Background Check: Must successfully pass a criminal history check.

  • Location: Calvin Rampton Building – 4501 South 2700 West, Taylorsville, Utah

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain the existing UDOT MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), OpenBridge Modeler (OBM), and Prostructures workspaces and other design software.
    • Assess and fix user‑identified issues, including liaising with vendors/support personnel.
    • Maintain consistency with UDOT Standards and design practices.
    • Update workspace functionality as software changes.
    • Stay current on software changes and best practices.
    • Evaluate needs of departmental disciplines and implement best practices.
  • Use ProjectWise Admin capabilities to manage workspaces and versions.
    • Support Digital Delivery and Digital Construction initiatives.
    • Develop workspace tools that support digital delivery.
    • Maintain and develop training and guidance documents as processes change.
    • Provide training and technical support to project teams on digital delivery tools.
    • Remain up‑to‑date with industry developments related to BIM, Digital Delivery, and Digital Construction.
    • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure CAD workspace and design practices complement other departmental goals.
  • Evaluate usage and needs for software used by designers beyond the base Bentley applications (e.g., AutoTURN, SignCAD).
  • Assist in software installation and configuration for CAD software on departmental computers and servers.
  • Set goals, establish priorities, manage resources, develop concepts, review project progress and results, and make management decisions.
  • Oversee development, evaluation, or review of plans and criteria for a variety of activities, assessing feasibility of proposed plans, projects, and equipment.
  • Coordinate and/or act as liaison between agency, work unit, and other agencies, organizations, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Develop, direct, and/or evaluate programs.
  • Plan and manage projects and/or programs, write (or discuss) project/program plans, recommendations, and findings.
  • Participate in selection of consulting engineers and oversee their work product.
  • Manage, plan, and develop engineering programs and coordinate activities of complex units and/or divisions.
  • Act as the technical authority on specific fields or disciplines.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal requirements.
  • Establish criteria for project completion.
Qualifications
  • Engineer Candidates ($46.67 – $74.06)
    • Registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
    • At least two (2) years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Non‑Engineer Candidates ($41.09 – $65.15)
    • At least a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related field AND six (6) years of professional relevant experience in CADD, software development, or a related field.
    • Directly related professional experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year‑for‑year basis (e.g., 10 years of experience if no degree).
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Expertise with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Modeler, ProStructures, and ProjectWise.
  • Proficiency with UDOT design development and advertisement.
  • Ability to deliver presentations and training.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office or Google Suite and spreadsheet software.
  • Proficiency with GIS, BIM, UDOT Digital Delivery, Digital Construction, and Data Capture processes.
  • Expert knowledge of MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer workspace development, setup, and management.
  • Current knowledge of UDOT Standard Specifications and Drawings; update workspace to current standards.
  • Experience with DTS software procurement processes and aiding in software renewals and acquisitions.
  • Expert knowledge of plan production.
  • Manage CADD Standards, Plan Sheet Development Standards, and Model Development Standards manuals.
  • Support users through written procedures, in‑person training, and impromptu problem solving.
  • Communicate directly with Bentley Support regarding product issues.
