Job summary

Freese and Nichols, Inc. seeks an experienced Civil CAD Technician/Designer to join the Dams and Levees Team within the Water Resources Design Group. You will create 3D models and CAD drawings for dams, levees, spillways, and related water resource projects, collaborating with engineers and project managers.

Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D is required; familiarity with Revit or MicroStation is a plus. The role offers a hybrid schedule with up to 40% remote work and opportunities to mentor

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience using Autodesk Civil 3D in engineering design/technical support.
• Advanced expertise in CAD software and operations.
• Ability to learn, adapt and solve problems to produce quality deliverables.
• Ability to work with all levels of personnel.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
• Preferred: Associate degree in CAD Drafting or design certificate or Autodesk certification.
• Preferred: Familiarity with Revit or MicroStation.

Responsibilities

• Develop 3D models, drawings, and details for dam, levee, and water resource projects.
• Utilize survey data to build accurate 3D surfaces, cross-sections, grading, alignments, and profiles.
• Interpret sketches/markups into precise CAD deliverables.
• Collaborate with engineers to produce construction plans, figures, and technical drawings.
• Apply and maintain CAD standards; update templates, styles, blocks, processes as needed.
• Conduct QA reviews on models, drawings, and survey data for accuracy.
• Train and mentor CAD staff and engineers in drawing production and CAD best practices.
• Coordinate CAD workload within Dams and Levees team and related projects.
• Lead CAD activities on projects; may manage CAD staff or library.
• Perform other duties with flexibility.

Job description

Freese and Nichols is seeking an experienced Civil CAD Technician/Designer experienced in AutoCAD Civil 3D to join our Dams and Levees Team within the Water Resources Design Group. In this role you will contribute to the planning and design of complex civil infrastructure projects including dams, spillways, outlet works, levees, floodwalls, gates, and related water resource structures. This position offers the opportunity to work collaboratively with engineers, designers, and project managers across disciplines while taking an active role in producing high-quality design drawings and 3D models.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop 3D models, drawings, and details for dam, levee, and related water resource projects.
• Utilize and interpret survey data to build accurate 3D surfaces, cross-sections, grading, alignments, and profiles for existing and proposed conditions.
• Interpret sketches, markups, and redlines provided by design engineers and translate them into precise CAD deliverables.
• Collaborate closely with engineers to produce construction plans, conceptual figures, and technical drawings.
• Apply and maintain company CAD standards and assist in updating templates, styles, blocks, and processes to meet the team’s needs.
• Conduct quality control reviews on models, drawings, and received survey data to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
• Train and mentor CAD staff and engineers in drawing production and CAD best practices.
• Assist in CAD workload coordination within the Dams and Levees team and across related water resources projects.
• Lead CAD activities on assigned projects and may manage CAD staff or the team’s CAD library.
• Perform other duties as assigned, with flexibility to adapt as team and project needs evolve.

• Proven ability to learn, adapt, and problem solve to produce accurate and quality deliverables.
• Ability to work with all levels of personnel.

• Experience with Microsoft Office Software, especially Excel and Word.
• Preferred: Associate degree in CAD Drafting and design certificate or Autodesk professional certification.
• Preferred: Familiarity with Revit or MicroStation.
